Insect Wing Photocopied for Good
CEH ^ | November 15, 2009

Nov 15, 2009 — Biomimetics is the new science of imitating nature – but why not save a step, and just copy the design directly?  That’s what Aussie and British researchers did.  They wanted a self-cleaning surface that could repel moisture and dust, so they made a template of an insect wing.  And why not?  “Insects are incredible nanotechnologists,” reported Science Daily.  Their wings are self-cleaning, frictionless and super-water-repellant.

Insect wings have these properties due to their properties at the scale of billionths of a meter.  “For instance, some wings are superhydrophobic, due to a clever combination of natural chemistry and their detailed structure at the nanoscopic scale,” the article said.  “This means that the wing cannot become wet, the tiniest droplet of water is instantly repelled.  Likewise, other insect wing surfaces are almost frictionless, so that any tiny dust particles that might stick are sloughed away with minimal force.”  That’s a dream surface for many human applications.  Instead of having to invent a surface by imitation, the research team is developing a way to use the wing as a natural template to cast a polymer surface that duplicates the exact structure of the wing onto silicone gel.  “One of the advantages of this approach is that no prior ‘design’ of the surface of the material is needed and so the team can exploit the enormous diversity of surface types from different insects and so produce materials with specific characteristics.”

Evolution was only mentioned once in the opening paragraph: “The surfaces of many insect wings have evolved properties materials scientists only dream of for their creations.”  Evolution and creation sometimes make strange bedfellows.

Next time you see a tiny little gnat flying around, take a better look at it.  Would you have thought that its wings have such amazing properties that top researchers want to copy it?  Who trained those little insects to be “incredible nanotechnologists”?

Good grief, evolution has nothing to do with it.  This is design from beginning to end.  It’s design in the tiniest of flying creatures that is so good, materials scientists “dream of their creations.”  Humans create; so does their Creator.  Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but plagiarism is copying some other Designer’s work without giving credit.
Program Note: this is the 600th entry in Creation-Evolution Headlines tagged with “Amazing Facts.”  Follow the Chain Links back through the past 9 years and you will find a wealth of incredible facts about design in nature.  That’s plenty of material to leave Charlie perpetually sick, wondering how his hopeless little speculation will ever explain them.  He gets sicker listening to the joyful sound of Christians across town singing with more and more gusto, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation.

All GGG posted articles must have the end-result in Man living with dinosaurs within the last 4400 years.

ES seems to greatly enjot the ridicule of those who post articles that lend support for the foundations of their faith (i.e. creationism vs evolution). Yet he will not ‘ante up’ and say anything beyond ridicule of others.

Just saying. Oh, also, there is a ‘Religion’ portion to this site. Just saying, again.

I also don’t make public my age, my undergraduate transcript, my graduate degree transcript, my name, my mother’s maiden name, my SSN, any of my pets’ names, my hometown, my currently adopted town, my kindergarden teacher’s name....my address, the company I work for...

Theism is irrelevant to the theory of evolution.

Were I an evolutionary biologist instead of an immunologist and protein chemist, I’d care to play your little game, would have more recent than 12 years ago information on it, and would post articles that pertained to evolution for you and the YECers to ignore.

So I search keyword “evolution” and come up with some decent stuff, but mostly Mr. “HIV does not cause AIDS” GGG posting the twistings of all things science-related to match the belief that Man walked the Earth with 100+ species of large meat-eating dinosaurs 4,400 years ago....written by loons like lyin’ Brian Thomas MS* (”the best scientific writer that ever existed”) that do nothing but pervert what they read, don’t understand much of the science behind it, and have one task....to dupe their flock.

....one doesn’t need much science-education to laugh at the notion of prehistoric Man walking with 50 foot, 10 tons of spinosaurus in north Africa....let alone vegetarian spinosaurus.

Wrong.

It has nothing to do with creationism and everything to do with the perversion of science to fit a theism by those that do not DO the science or, in most cases, even uknderstand the science......and it’s more than seeing something intricate and efficient in nature and saying “see, that proves the flying spaghetti monster created it>”

There IS a “religion” portion to “this site”....so why don’t you have GGG stop posting this nonsense IN BREAKING FREAKIN’ NEWS UNDER THE KEYWORD “EVOLUTION”? Hmmmm.......?

Go on over to the religion room and talk about Man walking with dinosaurs all you want, but so long as Man is walking with dinosaurs 4,400 years ago...well, that only deserves ridicule.

Good to see you. I was just a little curious if you were to be one of those who profess to be a Christian but, then pick and choose which parts of the Bible to believe.

Evolution is irrelevant, as it can not be shown to be true. Yes, I know, all those pesky fossils and such. Yet not one showing some sort of ‘evolution’ at all. Not a one.

But science says that ‘creation’ didn’t happen as written. Science can also point to LOTS of ‘impossibilities’ that are written of in the Bible, up to and including the resurrection of Jesus.

Hence my original question. Further disussions might be a bit more fruitful knowing whether or not you acknowledge even the existence of God, or His Son. Do you know Christ? Not trying to get personal or anything, no need to worry if I will engage in a little recreational ID theft.

It took fourteen posts before some evo showed up to ridicule creationists and start the thread downhill.

You guys are slipping.

No problem. It only went one post before the creationists ridiculed themselves!

But science says that ‘creation’ didn’t happen as written.

"Science" does no such thing, individual weenies waste their time doing such nonsense. You think us scientists are bothering ourselves with even making an attempt at proving that creationism is false? We've got better things to do. "Science" would say that there's no testable evidence of a Creation, but that's where it ends because there never will BE evidence of a Creation. Even evolutionary biology doesn't waste its time with the origins of life.

You want to believe in Creationism and God and such...so be it. I believe your God exists in your world because YOU believe He does. You say He created the world...so be it. You say He created it 6,000 years ago....fine, have your belief no matter how loose it may be with what can be observed.

It's the perversion of science that irks me. Don't go perverting science to say that the fossil record supports a 6,000 year old Earth, that all dating methods are 99.974% off the mark, that Man lived with vegetarian spinosaurus and then meat eating spinosaurus after the Fall, that every geological feature was created by a Flood 4,351 years ago, including the deposition of all dinosaur fossils....and we're fine with each other.

No, I am not a Christian of any sort, nor am I any other type of believer. My dog tags said "No Rel Pref"....I can be put in the non-theist category. I am not one of those rabid atheists that want God removed from all public existence.....us rational non-theists are much more numerous than those idiots.

Your evidence for Creation will be delivered to you when you are present before your Creator.

Sad to hear that you would label yourself as a non-theist. Truly, that is what I had hoped the most NOT to hear from you.

Everyone must have something to believe in, some ‘god’ to serve. THAT is a unique attribute of mankind. There is no such thing as a ‘non-theist’. So, you choose to serve Science as the Truth. I would pray that you have occassion to re-examine that, that you may come to see.

You are irked by the ‘perversion’ of Science? In this regard, we can almost agree. I grew up a very secular person, steeped in the science, the evolution, the natural nature of things, man is ‘just another animal’ mindset. But this mindset, is increasingly evident as the root of many of our problems as a society. It is a Perversion of science to kill babies and use their tissues to support other life or include in vanity products. The destruction of life for ‘science’ is the Perversion, not an argument about how many years the aerth has been around.

Man is NOT ‘just another animal’. Were it so, there would be no basis for ideas of ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. The age of the earth notwithstanding, the question of evolution is not proven or shown. There is no evidence of changing forms.

Sure there is adaptation But no evidence of jellyfish evolving to higher forms. No evidence of any animal changing forms to another. No Evolution of forms. We have adapted dogs to many uses. ALL are still dogs.

Had this discussion with many a person with faith and it usually ends with the apt conclusion that I am jealous of those that have a belief in a God, a real connection with their God.....because I simply do not. To be differentiated from the raving atheists, I do not say that "God does not exist", as it's patently absurd to make such a claim....just that I do not "have a belief in God", actual existance or not is not relevant to my lack of a belief.

It's just not there. Not going to say it never will BE there in the future, but I can't have what I don't have......and while I absolutely am engrossed in discovery science for half my day, it does not fill that God void or I'd not be jealous of those with such a faith, such a connection. Seems incomprehensible to someone with such a belief, but it is what it is.

I would presume no jealousy on your part at all. I am sincere when I say to you, that I pray that you will someday find what is obvious:

We, man, are different in profound ways from our fellow animals. A need to understand, a need to have a meaning. It is written that we were created so that we could know our Creator. And despite your lack of a belief or connection, trust me, He believes in you, personally, and wants you to know of Him.

I do not join in with these ‘debates’ except to possibly share that God is mightier than any construct of man. His ways are not ours. It would not be outside the realm of possibility for Him to have created the earth as ‘old’, even though it is ‘new’.

Christians are told to walk by Faith, not sight, to place trustin God, not in the works of man. In the face of the possibility of a ‘new’ earth that was created as ‘old’ I see perhaps a ‘test’ of Faith. My eyes say those fossils look really old, tests may say the same, yet things are as God created them, so says Faith.

I am not anti-science, love the stuff actually. I work within the Nuclear Industry, and there is a heavy knowledge of science required to do so. And I do think as more is discovered, especially in the life sciences, more credence will be added to the case of Creation. But coupled with my enjoymentof science, is trust in the Lord and His Word. Would that you would have that too.

I don’t think I have the “that’s obvious” gene.

When I see people like my mother’s sister and her faith and what it does for her in her life, I am jealous of that as it’s just not something I am able to have right now. She goes to one of those mega-churches outside of Denver...and I’ve been with her a few times....and every time I’m there I AM jealous of what I see that I simply do not have.

Why should anyone have make public their faith to post anything on this site. This is not a religious site.

Irrelevant question.

The relevant observation has already been made...by RoadGumby when he observed that ES is quick to disparage another’s faith, opinions etc. but never having the guts to offer up any such things of his own to withstand the heat of the kitchen.

Wake up.

Getcha some coffee or sumpin...

get a grip already, aptly named one.
