The washington Post ^ | November 3, 2009 | David A. Fahrenthold and Fredrick Kunkle

In a year of job losses, foreclosures and bag lunches, Americans have spent record-breaking amounts of money on guns and ammunition. The most obvious sign of their demand: empty ammunition shelves.

At points during the past year, bullets have been selling faster than factories could make them.

Gun owners have bought about 12 billion rounds of ammunition in the past year, industry officials estimate. That's up from 7 billion to 10 billion in a normal year.

Do some of you have more than your share?

I haven't counted recently, but I'm pretty sure I've got at least 40.

It’s showing up in 555s and 550s around me in quantity for just under $16.00 but at 6800 I’m good to go for now.

I think there is a move on for Walmart to stop ammo sales. The guy behind the counter in NE Pa.( Scranton) told me his orders were being cancelled .

For any gun-grabbers who think there is a chance of gun control succeeding in this country, this should convince them to give it up.

www.ammoman.com if you want to buy case lots.

Dont use it for self defense though..unless you shoot for the head, if the goblin is wearing a leather jacket hes liable to turn your scattergun into a giant suppository for you..if you get my meaning.

"It is amazing some of the people who are stocking up on food too, even liberals."

Two years ago, my hard core survivalist friends began stockpiling food and preparing. Like ammo today, finding MREs or freeze-dried camp food was impossible. Everything was bought out. Then, the Chi-coms started buying up metals all over the world, causing the price of ammo and reloading components to sky rocket. Then came Obama. Behold a pale horse...you don't have to be particularly religious to believe something evil this way comes.

I have a liberal friend who two years ago would leave a house if there was a gun stored therein.

Now, in Nov. 2009, he has a 357 ruger SP-101, a Kel Tec PF-9 9mm pistol and a 12 ga saiga shotgun. Hes constantly informing me of places to buy cheap 9mm and 38 special ammo too.

Life snuck up and scared the shit out of him Im guessing.

>”In between, in the 12 months since last October, gun shops sold enough bullets to give every American 38 of them”.

Do I get extra points if they’re in .38 Caliber?

As is Walter E. Williams, John M Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics at George Mason University.

Thanks for posting.
You are most welcome.

"I find this to be very encouraging news."
I was encouraged too, and somewhat amused! In reading further, I find that no all share my enthusium for the shooting sports.

More from the article: Reason for alarm?

The high sales have alarmed some anti-gun groups. Josh Sugarmann of the Violence Policy Center said he worries about a revival of the anti-government militia movement of the Clinton era.

"This is a pattern that is repeating itself, and it is a pattern that has tremendous risk attached to it," Sugarmann said.

But gun-rights groups say the buyers are law-abiding, and responding to legitimate concerns.

I'm forming an opinion that Mr. Sugarmann and his friends might think the Citizens of our country are getting tired of his antics.

Time will tell.

My local Walmart has been out of .22LR for months now.

I didn't get it there. It's Bitter Root Valley ammunition. But I don't recall what site I bought it from. :) Maybe Cheaper than Dirt. since they carry that brand, sometimes.

We all know about primers.

I could use another 5-10,000 Large rifle primers just about now.

Any suggestions on who might have some?

Do you know of any gun owner who only has 38 rounds?
I think they meant to say that Americans own 38 guns per citizen on average.
