Other Governor news from the past few days:

National pundit skeptical on White's chances in gov race

Nevermind about whether or why Mayor Bill White will switch to the governor's race. More importantly, can he win?

Larry Sabato, University of Virginia pundit extraordinaire, thinks not, especially if Kay Bailey Hutchison beats Rick Perry.

How do I know? His twitter posts yesterday, rearranged to make them more readable, cast some serious doubt on the chances of MBW.

...Houston Mayor Bill White(D) may be jumping in, replacing a weaker D.

This coincides with a nasty GOP primary fight between Rick Perry and Kay Bailey Hutchison. Speculation is that White will win b/c of split.

Background is media buzz about how TX will turn D because of Hispanic vote. Yes, it will-- but sometime between 2020 and 2050. It's 2009.

So Red TX will elect a D GOV in 2010--a year likely to tilt Red even in some Blue states? I'll believe that one when I see it.

Hard to see Hutchison losing in Nov. '10 under any circumstances if she's R nominee. I suppose it's possible with Perry(39% reelect in '06).

But I still remember talking to Hutchison & her GOP colleague, Phil Gramm, in a Senate meeting in Jan. '97. They both said, & I quote…

"We're the last Anglo senators from Texas." Well, it's 12 years later. Gramm retired and Anglo J. Cornyn has won twice. Premature prediction.

GUBERNATORIAL RACE
Path clearing for White governor run

Houston Mayor Bill White's wife, Andrea, served the visiting ambassadors sandwiches in the living room of their spacious memorial-area home as several hours of discussion set the stage for Monday's announcement that White is considering switching from a run for the U.S. Senate to a bid for Democratic nomination for governor.

As a result of that Sunday afternoon meeting, Democratic candidate Tom Schieffer — who was a Bush administration ambassador to Australia and Japan — announced Monday that he will withdraw from the race for governor to clear the path for White.

Schieffer urged other Democrats in the race to drop out and join him in support of White. “We simply must get behind one candidate who can unite the Democratic Party and offer a credible alternative to the Republicans,” Schieffer said. “Bill White is that candidate.” The mayor then held a City Hall news conference to say he will consider running for governor and make an announcement by Dec. 4.

“I think it's time that we have new leadership in Austin,” White said. “I'm disappointed at the failure to make real and tangible, significant progress on cutting dropout rates, improving school achievement, limiting tuition increases, fighting polluters, and I could go on and on.”

Several sources close to White said the decision to switch races was made at the Sunday meeting with Schieffer and his adviser, Lyndon Olson, who was a Clinton administration ambassador to Sweden. Houston lawyer Scott Atlas also was at the meeting. White insisted he still is in the listening stage.

she needs to get out of the race and step aside.
Who is after he job as senator, do we have a conservative for that seat in place or are we in disarray as usual in the GOP?

Leave Perry and she can resign while we get a decent conservative in place would be my dream

White is just a common, ordinary, big city RAT.

I’d love to see a primary race between Perry and Medina only. Kay Bailey is a Washington liberal and has no business governing Texas.
