Sea Is Swallowing Alaskan Town

Shishmaref, Alaska (Dec. 3) -- When the arctic winds howl and angry waves pummel the shore of this Inupiat Eskimo village, Shelton and Clara Kokeok fear that their house, already at the edge of the Earth, finally may plunge into the gray sea below. "The land is going away," said Shelton Kokeok, 65, whose home is on the tip of a bluff that's been melting in part because of climate change. "I think it's going to vanish one of these days."

I've notice a bunch of these articles the past couple of weeks. It's likely there are going to be a lot more of these "the sky is falling due to eeevil global warming" as a lead up to the Copenhagan meeting.

Ice Plant ~ a factory where they make ice, AND, something they plant along highways and steep lawns in California.

Probably not related to permafrost.

As a game biologist for the Alaskan department of Fish and game, I lived on both Little Diomede Island and Shishmaref while working on walrus migrations and seal harvests. Shishmaref is one of the most lonely and barren little coastal communities. Barely elevated out of the sea the main village was located close to the water to facilitate their boating, hunting and fishing. At low tide the boats are stranded for hundreds of meters off the shoreline. The shore is open and exposed and was being rapidly eroded by storms for years. It doesn’t surprise me.

I remember Hurricane Hazel, in 1954, ·and lots more since!). Wrightsville Beach (NC) has had millions of yards of sand pumped from the Inland Waterway dredging, and the local sound, onto the beach for "re-nourishment". I hated dealing with the shells and crap then exposed. It took quite a while for the beach to purge the junk, but by then, it was rinse and repeat! They strung pipes from COE barges to the beach, making boat navigation nightmarish.

Your tax dollars at work!

on the tip of a bluff that's been melting

That looked like dirt to me and as far as I know, dirt doesn't melt........

I think its natural erosion similar to what causes cliff houses in California to fall into the ocean following bad storms.......

http://www.co.saint-marys.md.us/recreate/museums/stclementsisland.asp

I live just up the Bay from this Island . In my youth it was much larger, when the first Catholic Mass in America was said there ,it was said that this Island was 400 acres. Now it is 40.

Another Island off it’s shore has been swallowed up, it wasnt Global Warming it was the natural tendecy of water to wash away the shore along the shoreline. My own property has the same problem, Thats what the rock and seawall are trying to defeat. Its called erosion. not Global Warming and it has been going on for thousands of years.

Sea levels have been rising at a constant 0.078 inches a year for the last 100 years with no significant change of rate during that 100 years.

This story is total BS.

"The land is going away," said Shelton Kokeok,

All we need to do, then, is to send money to the Great White Father and sacrifice a gaot.

Heres an idea, MOVE THE Village.
Heck - here's another idea - just move to California they'll take care of you and you can leave this lovely place behind:

"Its 600 residents endure temperatures that drop to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Polar bear sightings are common. Water is scarce. There's no plumbing in most homes; ice is harvested from lakes in microwave-size blocks and melted in buckets. No roads connect Shishmaref to the outside world."

;-)

“...whose home is on the tip of a bluff that’s been melting in part because of climate change...”

Does land MELT??? Or is it because you’ve built on ICE?

Classic case of “doctor, it hurts when I do THIS... What should I do?”

Is there an aerial view of Shelton Kokeok’s home? I wonder how much he was paid to make this claim - I seem to remember a similar story from several years ago.

Climate does change as nature works her wonders...so that is true...however it does not change the way the global warming nits would have you believe - even Governor Schwarzenegger is making a ridiculous claim....that news was part of a series on the history channel showing what would happen "IF" an earthquake caused a tsunami that would hit the SanFran shore......I shudder to think we elect and we pay these people.........
