That is actually a good idea, as long as it was voluntary and not dropped from above, why not have districts with different themes?

Works for Disney.

As for the homes..err...if one cannot say anything nice, do not say anything at all..

Typical NYT reporting. Heavy on feeeelings and low on facts. Do the residents pay for part of the housing? Who owns the land they are built on? Are the architects pro bono or payed full price? Do the residents even have jobs? How was the site selected? Does the project or residents receive government assistance of any kind?

I guess only "feelings" count - no facts for us!

Just giving people free stuff is how we got in this socialist mess!

Unbelieveable. They get free houses and they are still bitching.
I guarantee you that those house will be trashed inside of 5 years just like all of the free housing on indian reservations, and all of the other “public housing.”

but he needs a new architect

I've read he considers himself a real student of architectural design. For his birthday last year or the year before, Angelina got him a private tour of Falling Water.

I think there may be an issue with the wing shaped roofs.

I was suprised to learn that the NY firefighters were back this year in Bayou La Batre handing out Christmas gifts for the needy. This area was destroyed by the storm surge from hurricane Katrina.

This whole area, once again, thanks the NY firefighters.

Once again the New York firefighters donate their time to bring toys and food to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. At their stop in Bayou La Batre, local citizens donated money back to the firefighters to offset expenses. (Press-Register, Mary Hattler)

In my line of work I’m involved with what’s called “building science,” which has to do with how well structures perform in a given climate, among other things.

In the few pictures in the NYT, I could see numerous design weak points in the buildings. All of these can of course be worked around, but add to the cost and difficulty of construction.

I highly suspect these buildings are a good deal more pricy to build per square foot than more traditional designs, and I’ll be surprised if they don’t have moisture and mold problems within a few years.

I read a more in-depth article some months back. The Brad Pit homes have some very good design ideas: good circulation, materials that withstand the areas humidity and high temperatures, good kitchen floor plans, etc. He asked residents what they wanted in the houses and has insisted that the architects design those features in. All of them are built to be above the flood plain as well which accounts for their off the ground appearance. Too bad he didn’t insist that the archtects makes the designs a little more in keeping with New Orleans historical appearance.

My family members who remained in New Orleans before Katrina, have all moved elsewhere permanently. Their homes have been razed to the ground and all that is left are bare lots. Lots and lots of bare lots even in the parts of the city not so hard hit by the flooding.

Some of my relatives who lived along the coast have gone back and rebuilt. I don’t understand that as they have all been through more than one hurricane. Even though my father left Louisiana as a young man he retained a real deep feeling for the coastal areas.

I could never understand the reason to live in New Orleans. It is a constant battle to maintain your property and all my female counsins carried firearms in their purses. Crime was simply out of control.

The people who stay will have to determine to make the city something different - it can never be the same. So maybe Brad Pits ugly angular houses are not so far off course for the area after all.
