CBS Cancels Another Daytime Drama (As the World Turns) -- (Dinosaur Media DeathWatchâ„¢)
ABC News ^ | December 8, 2009

CBS is canceling the soap opera "As the World Turns" after more than a half-century on the air.

CBS says the final episode will air next September, in its 54th year. Daytime dramas have been in a long-term ratings decline, and CBS ended the daytime soap "Guiding Light" earlier this year.

The cancellation will leave CBS with only two daytime dramas: "The Young and the Restless" and "Bold and Beautiful."

They should produce it and sell downloads on the internet. Let the cast, crew, and producers come up with a formula to split the income.

>>Let the cast, crew, and producers come up with a formula to split the income.<<

During the writer’s strike in the 80’s, General Hospital was hot beyond measure with the Luke and Laura story line. I had just started into college and all of us would schedule classes around the 3 to 4 hour to see General Hospital.

ABC, not wanting to lose the audience, let the cast lead the soap. They basically took the story line and ran with it.

Best television EV-AH!!!

Then she would remember the deep freeze by maniacal Mikkos Cassadine on Port Charles back in the early 80’s.

So the question becomes is television still the preferred medium via which advertisers reach their customers? Coincidentally, there was this story just this morning. And they happen to be ATWT advertisers.

P&G releases online-only product

Procter & Gamble unveiled Swash today, a line of on-the-go Tide laundry products to be sold exclusively online.

“Our consumers are shopping, working and playing online, leading to the decision to launch Swash online only,” Swash Brand Manager Alejandro Bethlen said in a news release. “As P&G explores new ways to launch products, we feel that Swash is the perfect test through which we can evaluate e-commerce launches.”

If Mrs. abb is home during the day and watching the soaps, I know better than to try and start a conversation at that time.

My first knee operation in the 60's was in a hospital which could only get one TV station. Every afternoon, for lack of something else to do as I had already read the paper front to back, I watched some soap opera. Can't remember what it was. Because of complications, I was in the hospital for two weeks and watched it every day.

A year later I was visiting my cousins, three girls, during Christmas break and they were watching the same soap opera.

Out of curiosity I watched to see If I could find out what had happened in the past year.

The storyline had progressed maybe 1 week!

But the tv ads used to work on a passive audience. Maybe people watched from the courch or listened to the tv as they would a radio. But they didn’t change the channel.

With internet advertising, you have annoying popup ads that you MAY encounter on a variety of websites, but ultimately, there are plugins you can use that will block them from your browsing experience. And you don’t have such a lockstep demographic of those who clean the house during the day and can be sold some new and improved cleaner. Same with the gameshows that showed you brands and hammered into your head the suggested retail price.

Whew. I remember watching both ‘Guiding Light’ and ‘As the World Turns’ as a kid in the (very) early ‘60s on the few days I missed school because of the flu or whatever. What next? ...Maybe the Piels Boys will stop advertising beer?

Can you imagine how much money could be made if they sold these things in DVD sets?

I’m just going by the titles, but it seems obvious which way they’re moving, desperately trying to keep a young audience that might sell a few ads.

Probably losing young audiences to real life myspace drama (online gossip, leaked cellphone videos posted to each others' pages...)

To tell the truth, I’ve never, ever watched a soap opera in my life.

At the police station.

Jerry: What's that?

Tierney: A polygraph. It's what you civilians call a lie detector test.

Jerry: Oh. Let me ask you, when someone is lying, is it true that their pants are actually on fire?

Tierney: If I could tell you the famous faces that have been up here. A certain cast member of Melrose Place.

Jerry: Really.

Tierney: Have you ever seen the show?

Jerry: No.

Tierney: You can admit it Jerry. It's okay.

Jerry: I admit it. I don't watch it.

Tierney: Hey Lou, maybe we should put him on the poly.

Jerry: The poly?

Tierney: Yeah. I think you've seen it....

At Jerry's apartment.

Elaine: Melrose Place?

Jerry: Yes. Melrose Place.

Elaine: I just didn't know you watched that.

Jerry: Well I do.

Elaine: I mean every time I mention it you never say anything or join in the conversation.

Jerry: Well maybe I was a little embarrassed.

Elaine: You mean this whole time we could have been discussing Sydney and Michael and Jane...

Jerry: And Billy and Jake and Allison, yes we could have discussed it.

Elaine: Why? Why were you so embarrassed?

Jerry: The point is I'm going to be taking this lie detector test and that needle's going to be going wild.

Elaine: That is *so* stupid. Why don't you just confess?

Jerry: It's too stupid to confess. Look at what I'm confessing to.

Elaine: So what are you going to do?

Jerry: I don't know. Maybe I can beat the machine.

Elaine: Oh, who do you think you are? Castanza?

Jerry: Hey you know what? I have access to one of the most deceitful, duplicitous, deceptive minds of our time. Who better to advise me?

Heck, they could probably even leave the soap detergent ads in place.
