Breaking News: Pakistan Reportedly Detains Five D.C.-Area Muslims on Suspicion of Terror

IPT News December 8, 2009 **Updated December 9, 9:00 a.m. EST

A Pakistani newspaper reports the arrest of five foreign nationals after a raid in a town called Sargodha. The raid took place at the home of a member of the Jaish-e-Muhammad, a Pakistani movement designated as a terrorist group by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2001.

According to the report, "The DPO told that these people had been living in Sargodha since Nov 30 and it was quite a possibility that they were engaged in acts of terrorism." It names the five as Ahmed Abdullah, Waqar Hassan Khan, Eman Hassan, Yasir and Rami Zamzam and describes them as two Yemenis, an Egyptian, a Swede and a U.S.-born Pakistani.

There is concern they may have been sent abroad to train for jihad. The five were last seen November 29. The identities of two of the missing men, Howard student Ramy Zamzam and Waqar Khan, have been mentioned in online postings, including a Facebook page that was set up Monday for friends to offer their support. Some of those pages, however, appear restricted to friends and associates. A U.S. born Pakastani? Wouldn’t that make him an American?

Anyway, we shan’t jump to any conclusions here. After all it’s the right wing nutjobs that are the real terrorists in this country.

PAKISTAN
“Five Americans detained in Sargodha raid”

PAKISTAN

SNIPPET: “ISLAMABAD: Pakistani police on Wednesday arrested five American men believed to have gone missing from the Washington, D.C. area last month, officials from both countries said. US officials say one of the missing students left what investigators call a farewell video saying Muslims must be defended.

The men were picked up in a raid on a house in Sarghoda in the eastern province of Punjab, police officer Tahir Gujjar said, adding that three of the men are of Pakistani descent, one is of Egyptian descent and the other is of Yemeni heritage.

Regional police chief Mian Javed Islam told The Associated Press that the men were between the ages of 18 and 20 and had spent the past few days in the city, which is near an air base about 125 miles south of the capital, Islamabad.

‘They are being questioned and it is premature to say whether they are involved in or planned any act of terror,’ Islam said.

But two US officials familiar with the case said the five are believed to be young men from the Washington area who went missing at the end of November.

The FBI has been searching for the men since their families reported them missing and expressed fears they may have gone to Pakistan, according to the two US officials. The two are familiar with the case and spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

One of the men was a dental student at Howard University, according to the officials.

The officials said one of the group — they did not say which one — left behind what investigators believe was a farewell video message, in which he talks about defending Muslims and shows images of US casualties.”

I don’t know how this will end up, but it strikes me Pakistan may have just done more than our own security teams have been able to do.

Good for them, as long as it is proven these were definitely problematic individuals.

My wife and I know a Pakistani here in our area, and the guy is a good man. He goes to Pakistan from time to time to see family. I believe his daughter held a marriage reception or perhaps even a wedding there a few years back.

DC area "residents". Open borders are wonderful. Disband homeland security, immigration, and the passport office. They are irrelevant in the modern age.

A person of interest in the Bombay massacre was caught in Chicago.

Yes. Despite the Left’s assertion that there is no terrorist threat, there exists a fifth column in America.

And yes I am questioning their patriotism.

Good on CAIR for helping out, as well as their families for going straight to the authorities.

Good on Pakistan as well for fully cooperating.

In Pakistan, the government isn’t afraid to use the word “terrorist”

These 5 young men clearly had terrorist intentions and should be put away for a long time.

And more and evidence is popping up that a “fifth” column is emerging. Its much much worse then any of you can imagine here

Therein lies the problem. If it can’t be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that they engaged in illegal activity then we will just have to bring them back to the US and let them go.

Yesterday’s suicide bombing at the Kamra Air Force Base in Punjab was not the first strike at a nuclear weapons storage facility. After a closer look at the bases struck inside Pakistan since August, at least two more strikes occurred either on or near nuclear weapons storage facilities, based on open source information on Pakistan’s nuclear weapons programs. Since August 2007, there have been two suicide attacks at or near the Sargodha Air Force Base, a nuclear weapons and missile storage facility in central Punjab province. Other attacks in Punjab and the Northwest Frontier Province may be aimed at facilities providing regional security for Pakistan’s nuclear program.

Talking to them is a good thing. Maybe they would like to tell the American authorities who else/what else might be of interest to us (the U.S.A.).

On the 11:00pm news here in DC, they said that the Pakistanis said these jihadi-wannabes were captured in a raid on a house associated with a Taliban recruiter, and the boys were waiting to get in a training camp.

But you're right. They'll probably be questioned and released. "Open wide. Oh. Very bad. All those kaffir teeth must come out!"

Thanks, two of the arrested were at the home of their uncle Khalid Chaudry who works for the Highway Dept in Saraghoda, Pakistan.

Samirah Ali, president of Howard University’s Muslim Student Association, said the FBI contacted her last week about Zamzam.

Ali said she’s known Zamzam for three years and never suspected he would be involved in radical activities.

“He’s a very nice guy, very cordial, very friendly,” Ali said, adding that he has a bubbly personality.

They have the right to remain silent...Anything they say can and will be used against them in a court of law...They have the right to an attorney, if they cannot afford an attorney, one can be appointed to them...

Do they understand these rights???

You betcha, and as we have seen in the past all they have to do to muck up the works is say they were not afforded their rights as citizens of this country, even though they were arrested and not read their Miranda rights right on the spot, because Paki cops are not required to read anything, much less anything associated with American law...

That’s why I say, whatever they may know, it can’t be that big a deal, really, I firmly believe that...

So let them stew over there for a while...

Just my opinion...And no offence intended toward you...;-)

The FBI’s Washington Field Office issued the following statement:

Five missing individuals from the Washington, D.C. area have been located and are in the custody of Pakistani police. The five men were detained by Pakistani authorities on December 9, 2009 after they came to the attention of police.

The men were detained without incident and four were found to have U.S. Passports. The U.S. Embassy was contacted. An FBI special agent and two other U.S. government officials from the Embassy have spoken with some of the men. Although positive identification is still pending, the FBI believes they are the missing individuals.
