Thomas Sowell: 'Making history' even if it kills us
Orange County Register (CA) ^ | December 30, 2009 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 12/30/2009 7:43:22 AM PST by Oldeconomybuyer

The only thing healthy about Congress' health insurance legislation is the healthy skepticism about it by most of the public, as revealed by polls. What is most unhealthy about this legislation is the raw arrogance in the way it was conceived and passed.

In short, this is not about improving the health of the American people. It is about passing something – anything – to keep the Obama administration from ending up with egg on its face by being unable to pass a bill, after so much hype and hoopla. Politically, looking impotent is a formula for disaster at election time. Far better to pass even bad legislation that will not actually go into effect until after the 2012 presidential election, so that the public will not know whether it makes medical care better or worse until it is too late for the voters to hold the administration accountable. The utter cynicism of this has been apparent from the outset, in the rush to pass a health care bill in a hurry, to meet wholly arbitrary, self-imposed deadlines. First it was supposed to be passed before the August 2009 Congressional recess. Then it was supposed to be passed before Labor Day. When that didn't happen, it was supposed to be rushed to passage before Christmas.

Why – especially since the legislation would not take effect until years from now?

The only rational explanation for such haste to pass a bill that will be slow to go into effect is to prevent the public from knowing what is in this massive legislation that even members of Congress are unlikely to have read.

I agree that the President needs a big win, which he hasn’t been able to get as of yet. The biggest reason for all this, I believe, is to let Congress get their hands on more tax money that doesn’t have to be spent for ten years......on health care. Will it still be there in 10 years? I doubt it very much. The money would be put in the general fund and spent, just like the Social Security money.

Sarah Palin would do well to draw Thomas Sowell into her inner circle of advisers.

My heart aches for Dr. Thomas Sowell and other educated, dignified, brilliant, ethical, and conservative Black Americans like him.

To see a person like Obama being worshiped as “The First African-American President”, and then being exposed as a total buffoon and liar must be so horrible.

Dr. Sowell was at the forefront of exposing Obama prior to the election, and for that, he was vilified by the black community.

They should have LISTENED to him!

I have the same fears. A general principle of mine is to never let a politician get near a pile of money, if at all possible. How is going to make health care less expensive if we have to pay for both today's and tomorrow’s care now? And when we get to tomorrow, the till will be as empty as Bernie Madoff’s investment portfolios. This to me is basic common sense.

They know that it is basic common sense. They also know that the general public won’t pay any attention to it. They will also throw enough stuff out there and some of it will stick. They know this also. The whole thing needs to be stopped and reworked. We need to get to the point that Congress works for the people, not their own self interst.

prevent the public from knowing

There is much that government and the media do not inform the public of. However, there is very little that prevents the public from knowing by learning.

Not everyone can be as informed as Thomas Sowell but each of us can become informed. By doubting Thomas Sowell and then researching the information, you will discover the depth of his wisdom.

If I were a black man, I would be very embarrassed, perhaps even ashamed, at this point in Obama's presidency. Interesting enough there are few blacks who even know Thomas Sowell exist much less how wise he is. Those same blacks often have distain for Clarence Thomas or Condoleezza Rice or Bill Cosby while respecting Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Would you be surprised to learn that the vast majority of blacks vote Democrat and at the same time do not know who Everett Dirksen was or what he did on their behalf.

Dr. Sowell isn’t a young man—80 this June. I hope he can go on in good health, mental and physical, for a few more years—say about 20 more :) America needs him and very few new ones are coming out of the factory these days.

Thank you so much for your kind welcome!

Actually I was TOO conservative for "that other site" which was a conservative site!

LOL!

Oh, I had totally envisioned the wrong site. I thought you had the political equivalent of a going to Damascus conversion. Thought maybe the “left” was a play on words. And really, can you be too conservative ;) Hope you are finding a better fit here.

I was a real hippie pinko when I was a teenager, but that was LONG before the computer was even INVENTED!

I became a conservative when I voted For Reagan in 1980!

Am I still a n00b? LOL! :-D

Reagan? 1980? Oh, that definitely elevates you from mere noob status. I’ve been here since 2001, but I lose points for my early ignorance. Clinton—1992! No matter how conservative I become, I’ll always be somewhat tainted.

Ha ha! I used to do a R&B Review and I used to always dedicate a song to the President (who was Klintoon at the time)

Now WHAT do you suppose my Motown-Inspired song was, that always elicited great hilarity from my audience?

Mitch Ryder's "Devil With The Blue Dress"

I have been a Naughty Rebel for many years! Ha Ha Ha!
