2011 Mustang GT to have even more horses under the hood

The Ford Mustang will get not one, but two new engines next year.

Ford Motor Co. announced Monday that it plans to introduce an all-new 5.0-liter, V8 engine for its 2011 Mustang GT in the spring. The V8 engine will deliver 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque - 87 more horsepower than the outgoing engine.

"This is the right engine for the car," said Bob Fascetti, Ford's director of large gas and diesel engines.

Monday's confirmation follows Ford's announcement in November that it will also provide an all-new 3.7-liter V6 engine with 305 horsepower in the Mustang when it goes on sale in the spring. That engine provides 95 more horsepower than the outgoing model.

Mustang enthusiasts have been clamoring for more powerful engines, and Ford's new V8 engine is expected to give the Mustang GT the horsepower it needs to compete against the Chevrolet Camaro SS and the Dodge Challenger SRT8.

"The Mustang is a gorgeous vehicle that unfortunately this year ... was down on horsepower versus its competitors," said John Wolkonowicz, senior analyst for IHS Global Insight. "But all that gets fixed next year."

Mustang's shortage of power gave Ford problems in 2009 as the Camaro returned in the spring to the marketplace for the first time since 2002.

The result: Camaro has outsold Mustang for the last six months. In November, 6,887 Camaros were sold compared with just 3,627 Mustangs, according to Autodata Corp.

Ford executives are betting that Camaro's time at the top will be limited.

Ford also boasts that the engine itself is lighter and smaller. At 5.0 liters, the Mustang's new engine delivers about 83 horsepower per liter.

"Please compare that to whatever else is out there," Fascetti said.

Btw, my car is Canadian Muscle, not Detroit. Is it bad that I like that?

It is still a UAW-produced vehicle... so not really much of a "gain".

Still - great choice of car! I really do like those...(or is the term drool over?)

I had a 64 ford custom sta wgn that had a 429 police interceptor in it. Yes, it came from the factory that way.

It had crap gears in the auto tranny, and weighed several tons, built like a tank.

It wasn't much out of the hole but it had no top end. At around 130 mph it would start drifting around the highway enough to scare you into letting off, but still had plenty of petal and power left.

One of my greatest joys was being the engineer for the Heritage Motorsports Mustang that won the 2003 ROLEX GTS title. Tommy Riggins built the car for Dave Machavern and also co-drove with Dave in the endurance series. I still have the on-board data showing the carr at 199.6 at the start/finish line qualifyingg for the 2003 Daytona 24.

My first car was a 64 Falcon followed by a litany of Mustangs so I was in heaven.

Thanks. Everywhere I go, I get a 1/2 hr conversation, plus the head turns on the highway. I got it cherry red with black R/T side stripes.

5.7L (345 ci) V8 with a 3.73 real axle ratio producing 378 hp and a 5.0 0-60, the highest I could get. 20 inch wheels, touch screen sound with 6 Boston Acoustics speakers and a woofer. And all that was already on the car when I went to look. I was looking at all 3 pony cars, the Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger, but for the mid range price, the Challenger blew everything out of the water.

I find the design still lacking. I loathe Chevy but the Camaro design is so much better than the Mustang.

The Mustang has been around for so long, you’ve probably gotten used to seeing it. Wait til the Camaro design has settled in on you to where you no longer notice it at stoplights.............

For the record and indicative of not much, I have noticed there is a new Camero on the road. It is reminiscent of the Corvette. That is, some Corvette lines have ben redrawn on the larger Camero, especially the rear.

I looked for a photo but couldn’t find one to suit. It may be a ‘09 and the look was lost in the ‘10

I am trying real hard to "get" the new Camaro but having a tough time with it especially when it is coming at me. I know Johnny Stevenson and they have re-skinned their GXP-R's from last year with the new Camaro.

Honestly, I didn’t like the redesign when it was released. The backend/trunk space is entirely too long for the car.

At 5.0 liters, the Mustang's new engine delivers about 83 horsepower per liter.

"Please compare that to whatever else is out there," Fascetti said.

Sure. Mazdaspeed3: 114 hp/liter, VW/Audi 2.0T: 100 hp/liter, Honda Civic Si: 98.5 hp/liter, Subaru WRX STI: 122 hp/liter

"The thing about Mustang is we never left the market."

Well, if you mean Ford never stopped building cars called "Mustangs", you're correct.

“Ford’s new V8 engine is expected to give the Mustang GT the horsepower it needs to compete against the Chevrolet Camaro SS and the Dodge Challenger SRT8.”

IFIRC the Challenger weighs 800lbs MORE than the Mustang/Camaro. That’s like having TWO 18”x 2’x 8” granite tombstones in the trunk. Geez ya’d think the latter two cars would be fairly nimble to begin with.
