2011 Mustang GT to have even more horses under the hood

The Ford Mustang will get not one, but two new engines next year.

Ford Motor Co. announced Monday that it plans to introduce an all-new 5.0-liter, V8 engine for its 2011 Mustang GT in the spring. The V8 engine will deliver 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque - 87 more horsepower than the outgoing engine.

"This is the right engine for the car," said Bob Fascetti, Ford's director of large gas and diesel engines.

Monday's confirmation follows Ford's announcement in November that it will also provide an all-new 3.7-liter V6 engine with 305 horsepower in the Mustang when it goes on sale in the spring. That engine provides 95 more horsepower than the outgoing model.

Mustang enthusiasts have been clamoring for more powerful engines, and Ford's new V8 engine is expected to give the Mustang GT the horsepower it needs to compete against the Chevrolet Camaro SS and the Dodge Challenger SRT8.

"The Mustang is a gorgeous vehicle that unfortunately this year ... was down on horsepower versus its competitors," said John Wolkonowicz, senior analyst for IHS Global Insight. "But all that gets fixed next year."

Mustang's shortage of power gave Ford problems in 2009 as the Camaro returned in the spring to the marketplace for the first time since 2002.

The result: Camaro has outsold Mustang for the last six months. In November, 6,887 Camaros were sold compared with just 3,627 Mustangs, according to Autodata Corp.

Ford executives are betting that Camaro's time at the top will be limited.

Ford also boasts that the engine itself is lighter and smaller. At 5.0 liters, the Mustang's new engine delivers about 83 horsepower per liter.

"Please compare that to whatever else is out there," Fascetti said.

Doesn’t need it. The recent improvements in the LA on the Mustang are amazing and they are even better for 2011.

I have a 66 GT 350 Shelby Mustang. I own a small autobody shop and have restored several Mustangs over the years.

Note that the 2010 GT with only 315 horses is all over the Camaro SS like a cheap suit already...

Comment on the 2010GT from a recent test:

“Body control with the Track pack is astounding. It doesn’t pogo, doesn’t shimmy, doesn’t slump to the outside and clop its way through a corner. The ride may be firm, but nothing throws it off the slot-like path you cut through turns. And somehow that live axle deals with pitching and pocked pavement with much of the sure-footed poise of an independent setup. A Track-pack Mustang used only at the drag strip is a Mustang wasted.”

The 2011 handles even better:

“As we’ve previously heard, rumor has it that the ‘11 Stang with the new Coyote V8 and Track Pack with Pirelli P Zero Corsa R tires was able to lap GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, Michigan at the same rate as a current BMW M3 – fine company indeed. “

I just bought a 2008 Ford Shelby GT500 with 1800 miles on it. I plan on modifying it with Ford Racing Performance Parts that include a short-throw shifter, axle-back exhaust, upper control arm, panhard bar and a supercharger upgrade that will produce 605hp.

Just the fact that you looked out the rear window at all indicates that you are getting old. I never looked out the rear window of my old Camaro or my old Mustang because the flashing lights that would tell me that I was going too fast was enough of a warning for me.

The only time I ever looked out the rear window of either car was because of spin-outs in the snow in northern Illinois. And yes, I am also too old for a car like that.

Nope, had a Gran Torino, 351 that thought it was a 390, but it is long gone. Always liked the Mustang but never have owned one.

Nice car!

I’m an inept mechanic at best but I have undertaken some small projects on my car. Next up is brakes. I’m trying to decide between 2 kits. One is the standard front drum replacement with disks and the other is a replacement kit with 4 new drum brakes supposed to increase braking effectiveness about 30% and replacing the single master cylinder with 2 cylinders. It’s pretty much a necessity since I live in the mountains. Can’t decide though. The disks promise better braking ability but it’s apparently more difficult to install. Since I’m not too handy with a wrench it’s a difficult decision.
