Clemson takes no prisoners fighting squirrels

Clemson University is fighting back against an invasion of squirrels on its South Carolina campus.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reports workers spent much of December trapping Eastern gray squirrels, catching and euthanizing the 200 rodents allowed under federal law.

The squirrels have caused problems in recent years, killing about 100 mature trees by chewing on the bark for food and making their territory. About 10 percent of the campus' trees have been damaged in some way, likely costing the school about $1 million in the past decade. Clemson officials tried a squirrel birth control program, but it didn't do enough to curb the population.

Biologists estimate the 800-acre campus has two to three times the normal population of squirrels per acre.

They just need to import some hungry bobcats. Or Hawks. Or Owls.

Now that’s funny - maybe they should just arrange a squirrel exchange, like a prisoner exchange.

Impossible, they're all the same squirrels!

So are great horned owls... and they eat skunks, too.

Of course, they like big old storm-topped trees to nest in so if people have been sutting down damaged trees they have probably removed the nesting sites o squirl predators in the process. If they can put a box platform up a tree immediately with a cherry picker they might have an owl pair move in just in time to nest.

Those Crosman pump pellet guns are woefully inaccurate. Get a Gamo if you are serious about depleting your squirrel population.

OK, then they’ll just have to split them 50-50 and tattoo them, to tell what side of the river they need to stay on. :)

My big ole barn cat used to kill squirrels. Once he tried to catch one and only got the tail. That stumpy tailed squirrel used to make me laugh every time I saw him.

Be careful relocating animals. That’s illegal here due to the risk of spreading rabies.

I put a piece of pvc pipe over the metal support for my bird feeder. I helically wound some bare wire around the pipe like a barber pole. This got connected to an electric fence charger. Next problem was to dispose of all the squirrel poop !.
