PROFILING – A NON SEQUITUR?
by H. THOMAS HAYDEN on JANUARY 2, 2010
The Oxford pocket American Dictionary defines non sequitur as: “n. a
conclusion that does not logically follow from the premises.

It doesn’t logically follow the premise that protecting civil rights
and privacy is a sacred right and should take precedent over
protecting people’s lives.

Profiling can take the form of looking at certain groups of people or
looking at certain behavior. When looking for the first signs of
potential terrorists it should not be certain ethnic or religious
groups that should be profiled, it’s their behavior.

Normal law enforcement and anti-terrorism forces look for the
following behavior in a terrorist bomber:

Inappropriate clothing
Robotic walk
Irritability
Sweating
Tics or jerks in face or body
Nervousness
Breathing heavily
Staring straight ahead
Mumbled prayer
Large bag
Hand in large bag (possibly holding a detonator or weapon)
This is a long list and not all 11 fit a potential terrorist profile.
Five or six should be enough to arouse suspicion.

This is not to say that certain groups of people cannot fit another
type of profile and this is related to the long list of successful
terrorist bombers. Over the last 40 odd years, identified terrorist
have been: (1) male, (2) between the age of 18-30, (3) Muslim, and (4)
most with Middle Eastern family names.

Let’s look at Umar Farouk Addulmutallab, the terrorist bomber of North
West Flight 253. Only the people who saw him before or after he
boarded his flights can answers questions about the 11 signs of
potential terrorist behavior. However, Umar is male, he is 23 years
old, he is a Muslim, and his name is Umar F. Abdulmutallab. There’s
more: he paid a reported $2500 for the ticket in cash. He bought a one
way ticket. Although he was traveling for an extended period he had no
checked luggage.

This is not profiling – this is a suspect.

Just a simple blood test.. drawn with a rusty KNIFE at the NECK... Other than that..the ones named can take a boat.. or the BUS.

the lines at the airport will be a little shorter,, I Definitely WILL NOT BE FLYING... 3 days drive is better than flying.

Amish tree-trimmers. Vicious, determined, and they are known to possess lots of sharp tools.

The Israelis don’t use any of these methods … they use whole body profiling. Something along the lines of the popular TV program “Lie to me”. Obviously it works.

This is a stupid poll. How can you "profile" someone's religion unless they're wearing obvious jewelry displaying their religion.

I guess a muslim wearing a bomber jacket with 10 stick of dynamite would give him away as a potential suspected terrorist.

The government is actually using an anti-profiling method. Profiling first and foremost people who would never be considered a terrorist.

Anyone looking like a nun, a grandmother, a pregnant woman, woman caring for young children, a baby in a stroller --- is probably NOT a terrorist. And yet the gov determines that these people must be profiled first.

Makes no sense to me.

Here's what needs to be done...

Law Enforcement writes a letter like so:

Dear Muslims -

The whole thing with you folks flying really isn't working out any more.

Suicide attacks, bombings, that sort of thing.

If you want to fly, take a flight back where you came from.

Bye!

Sincerely,

>>I Definitely WILL NOT BE FLYING<<

Letting the terrorists and our stupid government cow you into decisions you would not make otherwise just gives them power over you.

I fly weekly and gird my loins appropriately. When I get on every flight I mentally pick out my “posse” and review everyone who gets on board.

Had I been on the recent flight, that SOB would never have even had a chance to start the fire, trust me.

Vigilance is always the price of freedom. I won’t sacrifice my freedom to fear of stupidity.

I’m with you. Muslims should not be allowed to fly into the United States, or in the United States. Period. They have betrayed our trust and abused the privilege we extended them by allowing them to come here. They need to stay in their own Islamic countries. If they want to fly, they can fly OUT OF OUR COUNTRY and not return. Their actions have made the rest of us utterly miserable. I think we should return the favor.

I heard so many people say the same thing. Stop trying to find the devices/weapons and start trying to detect terrorists.

I think anyone coming here from the nationalities and countries identified with harboring terrorists should first and foremost have a documented REASON for coming to America, AND, a instantly verifiable American SPONSOR.

This would put background investigating and the liability for his/her actions at the feet of the sponsoring individual, organization, school, or company.

I think this would present a first, great hurdle to the suspects and provide a way to safely "profile" suspects as well.

The days of anyone on the planet just up and deciding one morning, "Hey, I think I'll just hop over to the United States today.", have got to end. It's like leaving the money box unguarded at an auction....everybody wants a dip.

In the military, you can be in weapons and have a "secret clearance", and you can be in intelligence with a "secret clearance", but those two secret clearances are not "interchangeable"...you still must have the need to know.

You need to have an official and certifiable need to visit America, with sponsorships, and a lot of the "politically correct invasion" of America will slow down.

Even better, since they train pigs to sniff out truffles, how about training some to sniff for explosives?
