A major magnitude 7.3 quake hit the impoverished country of Haiti Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicentre of the quake, which was initially reported a magnitude 7.0 off the coast, was located inland, six miles (10 km) west of Carrefour, close to the capital Port-au-Prince and was only 20.5 miles (30 km) deep. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere....

Praying for your child, and ours. We have 2 Compassion International children in the Dominican Republic, one who is very close to the Haitian border. Also 2 children we sponsor through Food for the Hungry, but they are farther from the Haitian border - more to the south and east side of the island.

Right! Kind of like how I liked to be blamed perpetually for slavery, for something my ancestors may or may not have done. And if Obama ends up another Papa Doc - we’ll get to take the heat for that too (woo-hoo) /sarc

At least you’re a jag dork who sports a world view. Otherwise you’d just be a Pr*ck.

Spare the follow-ups.

Thanks,

I've been on three medical missionary trips to Haiti. I just got off the phone with the Monsignor who I accompanied on two of those trips. Early word is that Port-Au-Prince is a dust bowl, that the non-reinforced brick structures just crumbled and turned to dust. No construction there is earthquake resistant. Monsignor expects death tolls to be in the tens of thousands.

This is very bad, folks. Please drop the jokes and just pray for these poor people.

This was a city built to house 50,000...that has 2 MILLION souls living there and a very shallow quake just struck right in the middle of that city. This is going to be worse than any disaster the world has ever seen.

That is a very sad photo. Sad to begin with. Much sadder to know that they no doubt are ALL flattened and a pile of bricks with families buried beneath as we type.

I have a sister-in-law that works for a Haitian charity (here, not in Haiti.) She has one of the bedrooms in her house done in a really cool Haitian art theme.

I was merely noting that the factual claims in the post were largely true, not agreeing with the conclusions drawn. I certainly don’t think Haiti is irrelevant or deserves the many disasters inflicted on it, whether natural or man-made.

The hurricanes and earthquakes are merely geography; it’s a bad location for that.

It’s going to be pretty bad; it’s certainly not going to be the worst natural disaster the world has ever seen. Might be the worst or one of the worst in the Western Hemisphere. Deaths are certainly in the thousands, and may be in the tens of thousands.

There have been a variety of Chinese floods that may have killed a million+, and Bangladeshi cyclones killing hundreds of thousands.

This won’t reach the death toll of the Indian Ocean Tsunami, or the 1975 Tangshan earthquake in China.

Sort of amazing in this era of worldwide instantaneous communications we are only getting some photos and some eyewitness reports trickling out.

Mind boggling how these houses were built and placed! In a way, it's beautiful. Breathtaking.

I dare not visualize the domino effect with the EQ. All those people. So sad. Sending prayers.

Thanks so much. Return prayers. I was listening to FOX and the Dominican Republic doesn’t sound like it was hit as badly, but according to one report the Dominican Republic government tried to contact the Haitian government to offer assistance, and COULD NOT CONTACT ANYONE. Having been in Haiti, this doesn’t surprise me too much, but being in Port Au Prince on a good day is a bad experience. It’s been raining the last couple of days and I’m trying to imagine all those concrete cinderblock buildings collapsing in a city of 3 million with no communications, no electricity, no garbage pickup and half the population living in tents anyway. Haiti is close to Hell without a natural disaster.
