Long-shot Democratic candidates eye governor's seat [TxGov]

AUSTIN — One once ran for office on a promise to challenge Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to hand-to-hand combat while swimming in the Gulf of Sidra.

Another is a flamboyant private investigator with an international reputation as the “real James Bond,” who participated in the exhumation of Lee Harvey Oswald.

A third is a San Antonio doctor who paints and wants to teach Hispanics they need to learn to govern themselves.

The fourth is a Prairie View A&M associate professor who says blacks need to stop thinking of themselves as victims and believe they can accomplish anything.

The fifth is a Fort Worth school teacher who laments that the Democratic establishment has it in for him.

Collectively, they are the long-shot Democratic candidates for governor who could win their party's nomination only through the kind of lightning-strike luck that would turn them into the feel-good movie of the year.

The state's news media will focus on Houston Mayor Bill White's bid to be the Democrat nominee in the face of a well-heeled challenge from hair-care millionaire Farouk Shami. The winner will take on the victor of the three-way Republican contest between incumbent Gov. Rick Perry, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and activist Debra Medina.

“Farouk Shami” has a great South East Texas ring to it. I’ll pull for Faouk.

A Kookfest, but interesting to watch.

A kookfest maybe but it'll make Bill White seem "rational" by comparison. Good cop/Bad cop.

Jim Hightower convinced Kinky Friedman to drop out of the race (even HE was had greater potential to pose a challenge White than these guys).

The only name I recognize os Houston ex-mayor and ex-Harris County Dem Chairman, Bill White.

People outside Houston/Harris County probably don't know Bill White.

I hope the Rats allow all of this parade of fools to participate in their debates. It should prove loads of unintended humor.

I can imagine during the debates Bill White rolling his eyes, saying under his breath “do I really have to be here?” ;)
