No Whites Need Apply For Bill Gates Scholarship
Gates Millennium Scholars ^ | 02/03/10 | me

Posted on 02/04/2010 8:26:19 PM PST by DwFry

Bill Gates has made his scholarship fund off limits to white teenagers. The Gates Millennium Scholarship fund is financed by a $1 Billion endowment Bill Gates made in 1999. The fund explicitly denies eligibility to white students.

“Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they: Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian and Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American;"

So you say yes, Blacks can be barred on the basis of race from private scholarships?......I just wanna be clear since you never seem to want to make the statement for some reason.

Although come to think of it, a qualification like that on a scholarship probably violates SCOTUS’ reading of the 14th amendment.

First, give me a good reason that I should do your research?
Wow. You want to tell people how to spend their money, and now you want me to do your research.

I guess I’m missing what world we are both living in where only theoretically can Bill and Melinda Gates choose to spend their money as THEY wish, or where they are not both left leaning and also uberCapitalists?

It’s exactly what they ARE doing and have been doing for 10 years now.

That (the Millennium Scholarship) is only ONE of the scholarships they fund, so the headline here is misleading. There is at least one other (probably countless others, less publicized) Gates-funded scholarship that is open to everyone who is not a UK citizen. But it does discriminate because an average student will never be granted the Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

Because you’re the one who made the claim.

I don’t think they can be barred under SCOTUS’ reading of the equal protection clause.

No, the headline is not misleading. White people are barred from applying to this scholarship.

While I actually agree that he should be able to spend his own money how he wises, you & I both know that a scholarship that barred Blacks would never pass muster....and I have serious doubts that it would be defended by you to be honest.

“How does this pass muster with the civil rights bill of 64?”

What does it have to do with employment or housing or accommodations or voting?

A private citizen can spend his/her/their money any way they want that is legal. To establish criteria in a private scholarship is perfectly legal.

And, please note: this thread refers to only ONE scholarship funded by the Gateses, that is obviously very specific in its target audience.

What’s a “real” scholarship?

I was trying to exclude scholarships that amounted to nothing more than political grandstanding, such as this:

Anyone but Whites is specific?

So. Its his money.

It sure is his money; but that's not the point you big doofus. If Bill Gates had a scholarship that specifically excluded blacks, do you think everyone would be saying "b-b-but it's his money and he can do what he wants..." No, he'd be branded as a racist for the rest of his life. So why exclude whitey, Mr. Gates?

Anyone remember this controversy?

South African native Trevor Richards suspended over African-American campaign. The case centers on Trevor Richards, a junior at Westside High School, who moved from Johannesburg to Nebraska six years ago. Richards and his classmates, 16-year-old twins Paul and Scott Rambo, were booted from classes last week after distributing posters touting Trevor as a candidate for Westside High's "Distinguished African-American Student" award on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“To establish criteria in a private scholarship is perfectly legal.” Not if it’s a suspect class, they probably can’t. But whites are not really a suspect class. That’s what is missing here.

By being excluded, Whites are by default “suspect class” in this case....or at least that would be my argument.

Suspect class is a legal term of art with years of meaning. Your usage likely does not work.

The title says: No Whites Need Apply For Bill Gates Scholarship, and that is, in fact, misleading. Whites need not apply for the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which was set up for a specific purpose, to reach a specific audience.

My white son or daughter could very well apply for another Gates scholarship; thus the headline is, in fact, misleading.

As has been pointed out there are scholarships galore restricted to every race, ethnic group and religion in this country. So you’re going to post that “Jews Need Not Apply to Knights of Columbus Scholarship?” or “Catholics Need Not Apply to B’nai B’rth Scholarship?” That’s really earth-shattering!

On balance, if you were to balance ALL scholarships, you would find that blacks are restricted from many of them, simply because they do not belong to the particular ethnic group funding it. Not a whole lot of black or Asian Polish/Irish/Italian/Norweigian, etc., students out there. But all of those groups DO have scholarships exclusively for ‘their own.’ And it does pass muster. And I do defend their right to do it.

I would imagine, because there are or were few scholarships dedicated to minority or new immigrant groups, the Gateses established the Millennium fund. And, while I strenuously object to Affirmative Action in hiring and college admissions, I have no problem whatsoever with a private scholarship dedicated to minorities.

I know what suspect class means...and quite honestly the only people who qualify as suspect class today are indeed White people. What other race has laws made to bar them from certain opportunities?
