Mid-Atlantic shuts down ahead of huge snow warning (NWS Alert - warns of 20-30 inches of snowfall)

WASHINGTON – Shoppers jammed aisles and emptied stores of milk, bread and shovels Friday as a massive snowstorm blew into the Mid-Atlantic. Forecasters predicted a record 30 inches or more for the nation's capital, and authorities already were blaming the storm for the deaths of father-son Samaritans in Virginia.

The region's second snow storm in less than two months could be "extremely dangerous," and heavy, wet snow and strong winds threatened to knock out power, the National Weather Service said.

Flakes started falling around noon in Washington, where the federal government sent workers home early. The storm's wide swath and predictions of historic proportions for an area ill-equipped for snow had airlines canceling flights and school districts closing hours before any snow arrived.

The last time D.C. got at least 28 inches of snow was in 1922. The city has seen more than a foot only 13 times since 1870, according to the National Weather Service. The storm was expected to track through Virginia and West Virginia, across Maryland into southern New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Sitting in Howard County, MD, still thinking this might be a big dud. About 4 inches have fallen and it’s coming down hard, but, the rain/snow line has moved all the way as far north as the southern tip of the District...when all the weather dudes said it would stay WELL south of DC. I’m thinking we get about 6, then a changeover to rain, then peters out.

This just had so many characteristics of a classic overhyped dud.

I lived in Ohio for 29 years. In that entire time, only once was more than 20” on the ground.

Where I live now, if tonight holds true, this will be the second time in a winter I’ve seen it.

It seems that the weather systems that do hit here mean that although total snowfall is MUCH lower here, the potential for huge storms over 15” or so is MUCH higher than in Ohio, outside the snow belt.

I’m just north of Philly... they’ve been calling for this thing to start since 2pm and have been saying 12-18 inches. Haven’t seen so much as a flake.

I’ve pretty much given up on this one. Total dud.

It was on the radar here for 3 hours before snow actually fell from the sky.

Evaped before it could reach ground. The cold air at surface level wasn’t saturated enough to allow for the precip to actually touch down. Happens alot.

So you watch the same drama queen weatherman that I do? Tom Clark?? He was absolutely salivating over the thought of 12 inches.

It will ruin his weekend if this one fizzles out.

About 20 miles north, on the border of Bucks/Montgomery. We’re just seeing our first flurries now.
