Mid-Atlantic shuts down ahead of huge snow warning (NWS Alert - warns of 20-30 inches of snowfall)

WASHINGTON – Shoppers jammed aisles and emptied stores of milk, bread and shovels Friday as a massive snowstorm blew into the Mid-Atlantic. Forecasters predicted a record 30 inches or more for the nation's capital, and authorities already were blaming the storm for the deaths of father-son Samaritans in Virginia.

The region's second snow storm in less than two months could be "extremely dangerous," and heavy, wet snow and strong winds threatened to knock out power, the National Weather Service said.

Flakes started falling around noon in Washington, where the federal government sent workers home early. The storm's wide swath and predictions of historic proportions for an area ill-equipped for snow had airlines canceling flights and school districts closing hours before any snow arrived.

The last time D.C. got at least 28 inches of snow was in 1922. The city has seen more than a foot only 13 times since 1870, according to the National Weather Service. The storm was expected to track through Virginia and West Virginia, across Maryland into southern New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Cogitator, you're exempted from the above crowd, as you seem to have more reason than most of these people. However, I still disagree with even your solution. If we ever meet in person, or I meet another pro-AGW Freeper, I shall simply try to talk you (him/her) out of the thing. The rest of these people can go to H*ll!

Who are these people? Are you referring to those on your ping list??? If so, why?

LOL. Now that’s funny...

This could be the biggest snowfall this area has seen in 100 years.

At least you don’t have to shovel drizzle.

And just a light raincoat suffices, rather than longjohns, second teeshirt, lined flannel shirt, wool sweater, parka....

I hope that the system sits there and dumps snow over the area for about a week.

We’re looking over two feet in the eye.

Just praying power stays on. We got a Jeep. It’s in the garage.

Sing with me....

Makes me just want to burst out in song, too!

1. I WAKE UP IN THE MORNING AND ITS FORTY BELOW
THE WEATHERMAN TELLS ME ITS TOO COLD TO SNOW
I LOOK OUT THE WINDOW AND I KNOW THAT HE’S LYING
MY CAR’S OUT OF SIGHT AND THE SNOWS STILL FLYING
“WILL THE CAR START?” YOU KNOW IT WON’T
“DID THEY PLOW THE ROAD?” YOU KNOW THEY DON’T
“AM I LATE FOR WORK?” YOU KNOW YOU ARE
STUCK AGAIN? SO’S YOUR CAR

CHORUS:
I SHOVEL AND I SHOVEL AND I SHOVEL THAT SNOW
I GOTTA GET OUT, BUT MY CAR WON’T GO
I GET THE CABIN FEVER WHEN THE NORTH WIND BLOWS
I GOTTA GET OUT, BUT MY CAR WON’T GO

2. I CALL UP THE NEIGHBOR, HE’S GOT FOUR WHEEL DRIVE!
HE CAN’T GET OUT; HE’S BURIED ALIVE.
SNOWSHOE OVER, PLAY SOME FIFTEEN TWO
I GOTTA CHEER UP CAUSE I FEEL SO BLUE.
“CRANK UP THE BLOWER,” IT WON’T RUN
“GRAB THE SHOVEL,” ITS MUCH MORE FUN
“MY BACK IS BROKE,” (YOU’RE HALFWAY THERE!)
SNOWING AGAIN, BUT I DON’T CARE

(REPEAT CHORUS)

I HAVE A HOT DATE, CAN’T BE LATE!
STILL SNOWED IN; SHE JUST CAN’T WAIT.
STUCK IN THE DRIVE, STUCK IN THE HOUSE,
WATCHING TV STUCK ON THE COUCH.
“START EATING AGAIN,” (OH WHAT A BORE)
“I JUMPED A SIZE,” (OH EAT SOME MORE)
“I LOOK LIKE HELL,” (WELL LOOSEN THE BELT)
ONE OF THESE DAYS, THIS SNOW’S GONNA MELT

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Thanks, I heard something similar on the radio this morning but couldn't remember the lyrics so I just made up my own.

Snow on the ground, Snow on the ground

We're in the Philly 'burbs (West Chester/D'town area), smack on the line between "14-20" and "18-24," last I checked....but it has not even started flurrying here.

We are well-provisioned, and the kids are primed to make Snow Goons tomorrow!

There’s a funny piece at The corner by Jonah Goldberg about his experience in line in D.C. :

I’m talking about the Global Warming Fanatics, not my PING list. I thought that was clear, but I guess not. My apologies to all.

LOL - hialrious! I love that they were holding each other's places in line for liquor store runs.

I lived in the DC area in high school and experienced a couple of those pre-snow panic sessions. My dad used to laugh and say "You'd think it had never snowed in this town." As I recall, toilet paper was a particularly hot commidity during the pre-blizzard panics.

I must admit that my (adopted) hometown of Houston behaves much the same way when there's a hurricane in the Gulf. ;-)

I know- living in Florida is the same way- the instant there’s a remote possibility we’re getting a hurricane- the weathermen go just over the edge.

Oddly- when we’ve had the REAL hurricanes- they get very sober and serious. The hysteria seems reserved for possibilities :)

Peas are the very fruit of life to this Scots-Irish lad. I can eat meat, taters and peas every day.

Actually, I just about do.
