China on Friday stepped up the pressure on the United States, voicing fresh anger over an upcoming visit to Washington by the Dalai Lama and pledging a response to a giant US arms sale to Taiwan. With relations between the two nations deteriorating over a set of disputes, China said that it made a "solemn representation" to Washington about President Barack Obama's upcoming meeting with the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled leader.
"China resolutely opposes the visit by the Dalai Lama to the United States, and resolutely opposes US leaders having contact with the Dalai Lama," foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said, as quoted by the state Xinhua news agency.
In a separate broadside, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told a meeting of the Munich Security Conference Friday that a recently announced US arms sale to Taiwan was "obviously a violation of the code of conduct between nations."
"Of course the Chinese government and the people have to react. It is within its sovereign right to do what is necessary," Yang said in a speech.
"I think the Chinese people and the government of every region should feel indignant about this thing," he said.
The Pentagon a week ago approved a 6.4 billion-dollar package of weapons to Taiwan including a Patriot anti-missile system and Black Hawk helicopters. Beijing responded angrily at the time and threatened to punish US companies involved.
Despite political pressure at home, Obama avoided meeting the Dalai Lama when the Buddhist monk was in Washington last year, in an apparent bid to set relations off on a good foot with Beijing early in his presidency.
Obama however told Chinese leaders during his trip to Beijing that he planned to meet with the Dalai Lama, who is widely respected in the United States but branded a separatist by Beijing.

Let them eat chicken feet.
The last estimate was $800 billion dollars
Hey, it seems like O is holding firm. How about those treasuries? Does China have any good options?
So, it looks like it is time to stop “buying Chinese”!
China can always “call in the vig” which would be disaterous
How can you do that when many items Americans use are made in China?
i am under the impression that obama is not the chinese candidate (this was probably hillary, given the Hsu bundling stuff that came out). He seems more like the saudi candidate, or the muslim candidate in general.
I think Lucifer bank rolled Mohammed Obamma.
The Far East in general has always struck me as rather shrill...
I’m with O on this one - sell more weapons to Taiwan and meet with the Dalai Lama. Frankly, screw the ChiComs and their political system. If O backs down, he should be removed from office.
They just need to get a copy of the Kenyans BC.
If it costs them a billion dollars, its worth every penny. They’ll get a return ten fold.
The clerk in Hawaii who sells it will be on easy street for the rest of his life.
I love ticking off the Chinese
Of course if you're a Tibetan it is your sovereign right to bleed to death while you lick the jack boots of a PLAN soldier grinding his heel into your throat. Perhaps history will repeat itself and Tibetans and Mongols will rule all the Chinese again. May they have more compassion for you than you bloodthirsty murderers have had for them.
Well sheesh! what are we kowtowing to them over that for? 0baMao can print that much before the weekend is over.
As my pappy once told me when I was a small child -
“Never piss off your banker when you’re looking for some cash! “
Zer0, how are you and Timmie going to foist another coupl’a trillion off to the Chicoms while you continue to bankrupt the US??
The Chinese dragon smells weakness in the White House.
Wonder why!
Dumping even a fraction of those dollar is going to cause ripples in the U.S. economy — the dollar is going to fall, interest rates will rise and the housing market bubble could collapse.
It kind of looks like 0baMao will make that happen whether China dumps any Treasuries or not. Which they may do for purely practical reasons not political payback.
