Frogs and toads need road crossings, French say

An animal protection group is urging French authorities to build special crossings to save millions of frogs and toads from being squashed on the country's roads.

"For frogs, toads and newts, the most visible cause of death is undoubtedly road traffic: the animals try to reach the damp areas they need to reproduce and are flattened by the million," the Association for the Protection of Wild Animals said on its website.

The group's suggestions for reducing the death toll include advising drivers on areas where frogs and toads cross and lobbying local authorities to build tunnels to help them cross roads safely.

In the Lake Mead area of Nevada, you have paid for about a hunnert miles of 12 inch high desert tortoise fences to keep them from crossing roads.

The U.S.A. Bureau of Land Management virtually gave ($140/acre) my little city 200 square miles of land to be used for nothing but turtle habitat, recreation, or solar power farms. We rent out the land for $millions/year. Our town has a population of 15,000.

I hate to ask this dumb question...How many toad tunnels save how many toads? And how do they know? This country is mine and I love it, but its getting weirder and weirder.

Like I see lots of deer crossing the roads here in Michigan, but they don't go to the proper deer crossing area. Must have been taught to read in publix skool..
