This should be a fun thread.

The name Barack has gone up in popularity.
The name Hillary went down in popularity when the Clintons came on the national scene.

Where’s this lady been? This article could’ve been written in the ‘80s (and was).

parents are choosing less common names for kids, which could suggest an emphasis on uniqueness and individualism,Because people today could use even more self-absorption than they already have.

Well there the family that named their first three: LIberty, Freedom, Justice and the baby’s middle name is Ferrall.
ANd then there is Rosy, Red and Blackie Butt. (Last two WERE nicknames)
How about the Tree family: Douglas Furr and Mary Christmas?
Holly Day -— Holly Berry at least could get a name change at their wedding.

In "Unintended Consequences" there is a woman working for BATF whose mother decided to give her a name which is (she has been told) a variation of "Gloria" it's pronounced "GonORrhea".
As an adult, the woman prefers to be known as "GG"

I like something a bit more substantial.
My kids’ names: Casey, Matthew, Katherine (Katie), Hannah, Timothy, Elijah, Sebastian, and Samuel.

I don’t think the baby names are as much a problem as the parents that give them. A good parent can correct for the narcissism that can come from a unique name.
I know a child from a church I used to attend named “Shekinah Glory” — which was apparently derived by throwing a dart at a Bible. I also know a “Splendyd”. Those are the two most unusual I can think of.
That being said — when my wife and I picked out names for our two (Reagan and Caleb) we wanted something distinctive, but not weird — and something that would be cute when they are kids, but taken seriously when they grow up.
The thing that drives me nuts is the intentional misspelling of more normal names (or the random inserting of “y”s in place of other vowels). Aimee, Olivya, Jordyn, etc.

with most of them having been on a vegan diet people are naming their kids things like “Yippo” and “Lunesta” and naming their pets “Steve” and “Helen”.

I feel sorry for these kids. I had to personalize a Christmas stocking for a boy whose parents had chosen to name Anakin. This poor kid is going to be tagged with one of two unfortunate nicknames. The diminutive of 'Anakin' would be 'Annie', which is an unfortunate name for a boy. The other nickname would be 'Darth', considering the story line for the character in the movies.
Sadly, Avatar is now a popular source of names.

These days people give their pets people names and give their kids names that used to be used for pets.
