Police: Homemade bomb detonates in Detroit school hallway; no one hurt; student questioned

Authorities say a homemade bomb was detonated in the hallway of a Detroit school and that a student has been taken into custody.

Detroit Police spokesman John Roach says no one was injured in the Wednesday morning blast at the Phoenix Multicultural Academy on the city's southwest side.

Sounds like a soda bottle bomb, not an “explosive”.

Loud, and can injure someone a few feet away, but not on a par even with an M80.

Lots of teeth gnashing, wailing and hand wringing over what is most probably a kid's prank.

Dollars to doughnuts it was a tinfoil & toilet cleaner soda bottle bomb.

Fun to play with, but the stuff is caustic, so some care must be taken.

Today's attitudes in schools mandate severe penalties for anything from a loud fart upwards, so this kid is probably facing 20 to life.

Strange that they would name a place Roberto Clemente Learning Academy in Detroit. Didn't think there were enough Puerto Ricans there to bother to pander to. Plus, Clemente played his entire major league baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, so he is not identified with Detroit at all.

I could think of dozens of other people - blacks and whites, living and deceased - for whom it would be more appropriate to name that school.
