Screw the public. What do they know anyway?
The Orange County Register ^ | March 4, 2010 | Alan Bock, Register editorial writer

The headline on the e-mail I get daily from TNR put it more succinctly and reflects the elitist mindset of those who call themselves liberals or progressives these days: “Americans Aren’t Enthused About Obama’s Agenda. Screw ‘em.” They toned it down in the headline they actually put on the article, but not much. It’s an acknowledgment that a solid majority of Americans oppose ObamaCare, whether the House version, the Senate version, or the 11-page outline the White House put forward. But what do the poor rubes know? We wise elite rulers know what’s good for them much better than they do. So we’re going to give it to them good and hard.

William Galston doesn’t even resort to the ruse that polls show the public supports the most significant pieces of ObamaCare but for some unaccountable reason doesn’t support the whole. I suspect that’s for the very sound reason that most people know, based on a general understanding of the way Congress works, that there are all kinds of hidden payoffs, controls and expenses secreted away in the “comprehensive” bill, as there are.

So we have Obama and the House leaders doing the full-court press, buying off reluctant moderate Democrats and apparently willing to sacrifice their majority to get this supposedly historic health-care bill done, even if it has to be on a completely party-line vote. The notion that a reordering of one-sixth of the economy should command a stronger consensus than a single party that includes members who have been bludgeoned and bribed into going along, in the face of solid opposition from the public, doesn’t seem to register at all. We’ve wanted this pig since Teddy Roosevelt’s day, and this looks like our last best chance, so break out the bulldozers.

Breathtaking.

They think the GOP will be loathe to repeal it once it's in place, just like Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, Food Stamps, etc. Since the Republicans have never really fought those after the fact, they may have a point.

True. Even when someone like Jim Bunning makes a procedural point to force the dems to follow their own legislation on Paygo, he gets crucified as evil for holding up unemployment checks and his GOP brethren, with the exception of Jim DeMint, fail to back him up.

But this disaster doesn't kick in until 2016 or some such. Plenty of time to get the Kenyan out of the WH and a GOP congress to repeal what has not been implemented yet. Maybe?

Interesting newspaper. I bet the front page editor is all in support of Obama-care while obviously the editorial page is against it.

And those Republicans that didn’t back him up... were elected by *US*.

Stop voting for these libtards in disguise and instead, vote for a candidate that actually represents your beliefs. Doing anything else will just get us more of the same.

The Dems know that most voters want all the free stuff from government they can get. If Republicans try to impose financial discipline after a give-away bill's been passed it will cost them heavily at the polls, even if its long-term effects will be harmful. Greedy people care only about themselves.

Maybe? Maybe not. They've written into the bill protections against repeal.

It's a communist full-press to reform America. We've tolerated socialism since FDR, why not push for more?

If I had been a half-black, Affirmative Action success story with a Harvard degree and raised by surogate fathers who hate America, I might be going Mao, too.

Trouble is: this punk was elected President. Amerikans elected a communist to the highest office of the land. Think things are bad now, just wait.

If I might interject something here: The reason they are doing this is that 'they' are not planning on a 2010 election cycle to occur

There will be another interesting showdown coming up if this bill becomes law. Many states have passed laws basically saying that they will disregard any fed law mandating Obamacare on their states. Also, a question I have. What’s to say that all of the tax money they will be collecting for four years before Obamacare actually kicks in, will not be spent up by the Dem Congress and the Obama Admin, before then? Is there a lockbox? I doubt it. The money will be spent way before Obamacare even kicks in.

All of those programs you listed were passed by Congress with large vote margins. This is a new ballgame.

I can't believe that. Coup d'etat?

Death warrant. Literally. For thousands, hundreds of thousands of "Progressive" activists. It would be Indonesia redux. Their bloated bodies would be washing up on the Atlantic beaches for months.

See your impossibility and raise you a gallery of horrors.

And what is your basis for such a nearly absurd hypothesis?

If you actually believe that things are moving along “as usual” you are not living in the same country as I or you are very young. If you have not been watching the movements of this administration closely and the totally blatant disregard for the Constitution of the United States you are not living in the same country as I. If you haven’t been watching the increasingly oppressive regulations being passed or the appointment of Czars with communist ties, (verifiable by the way) then I don’t know what alarm bells have to go off before you notice. Do I hope I’m wrong? you betchya but based on the behavior immediately after the election and for the past year, I believe we are being set up for this possible scenario. It’s not just the ‘enemy’ from within, this administration has ingratiated itself to outside enemies as well....no matter what the media tells you about this Marxist is being slammed acrossed the world, remember the ‘enemy of my enemy is my friend’ saying.

Many outside foes want to see the USA crippled and fall and now we have an administration with the same goal.
