Vanity: Government mandated (forced) health insurance is dumb

Posted on 03/09/2010 2:50:13 PM PST by Jim Robinson

Forcing health insurance companies to cover people with preexisting conditions with no limits is like forcing automobile insurance companies to cover people who have already wrecked their cars or homeowners after their homes have already burned down. Either premium costs go up across the board or the companies go bankrupt or probably both. It's unworkable. All insurance companies will eventually go broke or insurance will be priced out of the market for most people.

Obama wants to totally uproot a system that works very well for 85-90% of all Americans to benefit the 10-15% who are not covered or can't be covered or cannot afford coverage. Why trash the entire system to gain coverage for less than 15% while violating the constitution, depriving us of free markets and individual freedoms, and driving up costs for all? The uninsured get health care now when it's needed either by paying for it directly or through charity or government subsidies.

And those who cannot afford insurance now, including a large percent of those with preexisting conditions, will be subsidized by the taxpayers anyway. The whole idea is an exercise in futility.

Other than Medicare, the taxpayer is currently on the hook for something less than than the 15% percent uninsured. Why upset the entire system and put us on the hook for the entire one hundred percent, plus?

All insurance companies will eventually go broke or insurance will be priced out of the market for most people.

That's the goal. Then single-payer will be presented as the "solution" to the problem that their "reform" created in the first place.

And people will be dumb enough to buy into it.

I am very happy with my medical care as it is and am opposed to any mandates until congress votes to curb lawsuits against the medical profession and allow insurance companies to compete across state lines...

It doesn't make sense to me. I have preexisting conditions & I pay for my insurance gladly. If it were to change it would cost everyone else more to insure me. I don't want to do that. I want to pay my own way & want the govt to keep their noses & fingers as much out of my life as possible!

Jim, it's bigger than that.

The following is occuring:

  1. They are attempting to pass this thing through UTTERLY extra-Constitutional measures now. They intend to try to get it through WITHOUT a House Vote.
  2. It has very little to do with Healthcare, and everything to do with (in the long run) making the political Right utterly powerless, for -- if it gets that far -- who would dare run against taking EVERYONE'S health insurance away? It has to do with making us a Communist nation.

This is what happens when you have folks with ZERO real world business experience much less risk management.

Whether this is due to intentional ignorance or a mad liberal power grab is irrelevant. The final result will be more illness, poverty, class warfare and bigger government.

My concern is that the financial markets (I.e. the friendly Chinese Central Bankers) will allow this to continue into the foreseeable future and anyone that studies history knows that this will not!! The Germans are already bristling at bailing out Greece while Icelanders are showing increasing saltiness over their deal with UK and Dutch banks.
Some could credibly state that this is the Cloward-Piven strategy or actual conspiracy and I would have a hard given time all that we now know to doubt this. It looks more and more like 1789 or 1859 everyday... I sincerely hope I am wrong.

Well, true that.

We have a genuine problem on our hands per the other two points. It really looks like they intend to upset the Constitution completely, and Communise the country as quickly as possible.

IF Obama permits elections this November. I have a geniune concern that the reason he doesn't seem to care about the polls or the November elections is, there won't be any.

Everything...so-called health care, cap and tax, even the census, are all going on for one particular reason — so that government can exert control over every aspect of our lives.

It is dumb and it is communist and statist at its core.

Whose right is health care? Do you think it's yours?

Congressman Anthony Weiner has said that health care is not a commodity. If it isn't a commodity then do doctors and nurses have rights? Assigning health care the status of a right makes health care workers slaves to that right who must serve it. On what ground could a health care worker refuse to provide their products and services since that would violate the patient's "basic human right to health care."

That is a direct loss of individual rights for health care providers. The collective right of the people to receive health care would supersede the provider's individual right to set fees and hours or to change their occupational status or even decide how to apply their skills and knowledge if taken to its logical extreme. A collective right, by practical definition, is a state right because it is a right that is created and given by the government to those it chooses to give it to. It is not a natural right possessed by each person protected by the Constitution from the government. It is also a collective/state right by virtue of the fact that it would supersede individual rights when the two come into conflict. How else would the government view a right that it created and administers vs. one it has no control over?

Of course it isn't stated in any bill that a patient's right to care supersedes a provider's right to set fees and hours etc, but it doesn't need to. Rights, as always, are adjudicated in the courts. The Health Care Reform bills simply establish the foundation for the courts to rule in favor of the collective right.

Weiner’s view is collectivist, fascist and totalitarian. Collectivist because it has to be described as being a right of the many instead of the one and superior due to that fact. Fascist because ultimately the sole authority for its creation and oversight is from one entity the Federal government. Totalitarian because the Federal government is the enforcer of this collective right as well. State and local jurisdictions will have little say about it.

Congressman Weiner's view is the underlying philosophy of all of the Health Care Reform legislation in the House and Senate. Consider this section in the Senate version of the bill; the setting up of community watch dogs that will monitor citizens for various health parameters. Read pages 382 - 393.

TITLE I—QUALITY, AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL AMERICANS pps 382 - 393

So, even citizens themselves will be subject to Federal regulations on their behavior in order to fulfill the "human right" of universal health care. It isn't the individual's liberty that is being protected by that it is the government's control over its own health care system that is being guarded. How much clearer can it be that these bills abrogate the concept of individual rights? Someone will be checking your lifestyle, according to gov regulations, to be certain you serve the best interests of the "basic human right to health care" ie. "the Public Option."

HCR is not just about rationing care and wealth redistribution. It's about the end of individual rights as the corrosive effects of the new collectivist "basic human right to health care" spreads throughout the legal and political systems like a virus.

I think that the main purpose of Health Care Reform (HCR) is as a direct assault on individual liberties.

Forget the mandate. I think the two key ideas here are control and redistribution. Control has been discussed by others often, but redistribution less so.

Many object to the mandate that “all” purchase medical insurance, but don’t focus on the fact that the price for that insurance will be means tested. So, if you are poor, and statistically many Dem client groups are, the insurance is essentially free or low cost; if you are better off, the insurance is mandatory and very costly. This is a thinly disguised transfer payment.

If you look at many of the Obama initiatives, they are disguised transfer payments. Consider the union givebacks—not only GM, but the recent initiative to force the government to only use union contractors. Redistribution to politically favored groups is a central theme of Obama’s, and the medical care sector is one of the biggest pots to redistribute. As BHO said to Joe the Plumber, “I want to spread the wealth around.” He really meant it.

Yup. The lefties pushing this plan emote rather than analyze. The math says that health care spending cannot continue to grow faster than wages. These are two diverging exponential functions - and the continued mismatched growth is unsustainable. In a free society, the best way to control spending is to make the spender responsible for their choices. Free people are always free to donate for the care of others they deem deserving. Health care is a purchase, not an entitlement.
