Madoff Beaten in Prison
The Wall Street Journal ^ | March 18, 2010 | Dionne Searcey and Amir Efrati

Bernard Madoff, who is serving a 150-year sentence in North Carolina for running a fraud scheme that cost investors billions of dollars, was physically assaulted by another inmate in December, according to three people familiar with the matter.

After the attack, Mr. Madoff, who pleaded guilty a year ago and was sent to a federal prison in Butner, N.C., was moved on Dec. 18 to the prison's low-security medical center for treatment. At the time, the Bureau of Prisons said that rumors of an assault were false and that Mr. Madoff suffered from dizziness and hypertension.

One of his lawyers, Ira Sorkin, added at the time that Mr. Madoff was experiencing high blood pressure and heart palpitations. Mr. Sorkin declined to comment Wednesday on whether his client was beaten, saying, "I don't comment on prison conditions or his family. That has been my policy."

Mr. Madoff was treated for a broken nose, fractured ribs and cuts to his head and face, according to a felon currently at Butner serving time on drug charges who was familiar with his condition at the time. The details of the injuries couldn't be independently verified.

Why would prison officials put a high profile prisoner in general population?

The sex must have gotten a little rough.

Not as rough as the ‘sex’ he had against the people he stole from, but it’s still enjoyable to hear of.

Surely this can't be the 1st time that the press has covered this story!

Bernie Madoff’s crimes were not violent in any sense, i.e. he did not assault or kill people.

Bernie Madoff probably deserves to be drawn and quartered for all the misery he has dished out.

However, we are a civilized country, and the idea that people in jail, even creeps like Madoff, can be beaten by thugs is abhorent.

The most hated man in the world should not have been in general population.

For the damage he did to so many people Madoff deserves whatever he gets.

Bernie Madoff’s crimes were not violent in any sense, i.e. he did not assault or kill people.

He did worse than that. He stole college educations, secure retirements, and decades of saving from scores of people.

I agree. Government-run prisons can’t stop dealing and rape, but the government should run health care.

And a Social Security office is the best place to read every article in a boring magazine.

Wow. What a con artist he truly is. I wouldn’t want my life savings siphoned by Madoff.

Conceptually, I suppose I agree with your statement.

However, for someone like Madoff, getting beaten in prison is simply “the cost of doing business”, or merely a negative side effect of being placed into a prison population.

So, whether the individual be a psychotic monster, the likes of Jeffrey Dahmer, a child sex predator, or a white collar criminal, such as Madoff is, I can’t lose a whole lot of sleep knowing they are being served the daily ration of prison life.

It would bother me if the criminal were wrongfully convicted. Madoff, certainly is not. He destroyed peoples’ lives in ways that you and I can’t even imagine.

The best that I can do is an apathetic “oh well”.

At some point, possibly one of his fellow inmates will do Bernie in. His life will be over, ending his worldly suffering, and Madoff can go on to the ultimate judgment.

Madoff is 71 years old and is serving 150 years in prison. He will never see freedom again and will die in prison. NB: (I say, that type of punishment is good and sufficient. However, I still seriously advocate the punishment Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona gives because it is Constitutional. Prison conditions, food and environment should be harsh.) The State has convicted and sentenced Bernie Madoff and yet that doesn't seem to be enough punishment for you.

According to your book, how often does Madoff deserve have his nose broken, his ribs fractured and his head and face cut ? Should the prison beatings you advocate, be a scheduled and even a televised event ? Perhaps beatings or even prison gang rapes that others seem to advocate, be based on a pay-per-view to off-set the costs of housing inmates. Should prisoners be tied to a post and flogged and if so, how often and how many lashes ? What about cutting off of limbs like they do in Saudi Arabia, is that something you would advocate as punishment for convicted felons like Bernie Madoff ?

Should punishment imposed by the State go beyond what is required by law ? If we're supposed to be a nation of laws, and we advocate prison beatings or more, what makes us so different from them ?

No, it's way over the edge. Bernie Madoff should be treated like any other prisoner regardless of the severity of his crimes.
