Madoff Beaten in Prison
The Wall Street Journal ^ | March 18, 2010 | Dionne Searcey and Amir Efrati

Posted on 03/17/2010 11:34:32 PM PDT by myknowledge

Bernard Madoff, who is serving a 150-year sentence in North Carolina for running a fraud scheme that cost investors billions of dollars, was physically assaulted by another inmate in December, according to three people familiar with the matter.

After the attack, Mr. Madoff, who pleaded guilty a year ago and was sent to a federal prison in Butner, N.C., was moved on Dec. 18 to the prison's low-security medical center for treatment. At the time, the Bureau of Prisons said that rumors of an assault were false and that Mr. Madoff suffered from dizziness and hypertension.

One of his lawyers, Ira Sorkin, added at the time that Mr. Madoff was experiencing high blood pressure and heart palpitations. Mr. Sorkin declined to comment Wednesday on whether his client was beaten, saying, "I don't comment on prison conditions or his family. That has been my policy."

Mr. Madoff was treated for a broken nose, fractured ribs and cuts to his head and face, according to a felon currently at Butner serving time on drug charges who was familiar with his condition at the time. The details of the injuries couldn't be independently verified.

For the damage he did to so many people Madoff deserves whatever he gets.

I respectfully disagree. America is not some blood-thirsty third-world backwash that survives on "prison justice". America is better than that. We are a nation of laws. See my post in #19.

You might want to talk with those who put guns to their heads after the losses he created for them. That’s more than violent that is deadly..and he in part is responsible a portion of that.

No. One set of events is NOT RELATED to the other. ZERO and the others in DC were ELECTED by We The People. Bernie Madoff was not elected by We The People and has been rightfully convicted and sentenced.

You misssed my point....I’m saying you cannot put a group of criminals in penned up spaces without the freedoms and lifestyles they once knew and expect prison guards are going to be able to stop the thugs in their anymore than the thugs stopped in Gov......the similarities are they both are doing time...difference is one is free to leave anytime.

I wouldn’t overthink this thing. Okay, the warden should find the prisoner who beat up Madoff and punish him, if he can. What people on this thread are basically saying is, (shrug), “So Madoff got beat up. Good. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.” That is, people aren’t necessarily saying that Madoff should have been beaten up, but rather, since it happened anyway, oh freaking well....

Let me ask you this: Do you feel sorry for Madoff?

Feel sorry for Bernie Madoff ? I am in no way responsible for Bernie Madoff's circumstances. America is a nation of laws. I say, the type of sentence of 150 years in prison that Bernie Madoff got is good, just and sufficient. However, I also still seriously advocate the punishment Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona gives because it is Constitutional. Prison conditions, food and environment should be harsh. I DO NOT advocate punishment for Bernie Madoff that is in any way beyond the law. Prison beatings of sentenced 71 year old men who will die in prison, is not something of which I approve.

Pathetic that Juxtice has yet to reach out and touch Harry, Barney and more of their rat peers, who should be sharing Maddoff's dinner table.

BYW

I read two small books about this guy:

1) He is NOT a kindly old grandpa: instead, think shouting, whoring, cursing liar and you are closer to the picture.

2) As near as I can tell, the government is NOT telling you even half of the true story- for example, he started a “brokerage” from his living room in 1960 or so, with his wife, and there is speculation that he NEVER placed a single stock trade for a single customer from day one; that he just pocketed EVERY PENNY he ever took in for something like 48 years! Wow.

3) His whole family, obviously, was involved yet none has gone to jail.

4) He never co-operated even for a moment yet was out on bail for many months.

5) Lived like a king (well, better than a king actually) just as you would suspect, all on other people’s dimes.

6) The accounting was ALL done by one old guy in a tiny one-man office at a far away strip mall, yet the SEC couldn’t or wouldn’t catch him despite 20 years or more of tip offs. Typically 100 accountants YEAR ROUND would be needed.

And oh yeah -——— he sneered and then laughed at the poor Frenchie who killed himself honorably.

still

I don’t think ANY prisoner deserves to be cut or maimed in an American prison.

But:

Did you ever watch them pumping iron in the yard in any movie with a prison scene???

How can Libs possibly let them pump up while in, and then walk the streets with huge bulging muscles, when they’re out of the joint.

See: Blood In Blood Our for more information (great movie).

It is even worse than that, this E V I L, totally amoral man even stole from his own sister.

He destroyed the lives of so many people it is a wonder the man is still alive. I thought by now some irate investor whose life he ruined would have had him pushing up daisys by now. With all of the powerful, influential and even criminal people Madoff hurt it is amazing he is still alive.

This is probably just the beginning of many more incidents that he will endure before he takes his dirt nap.

I can't imagine that the person(s) who beat up Madoff were former investors. I would also find it odd if any of the inmates were terribly disturbed that Madoff ripped off a bunch of well-to-do people. That's probably what half of them are in for.

For payback to come it does not necessary have to come from those you have wronged. It just does.

Bernie Madoff’s crimes were not violent in any sense, i.e. he did not assault or kill people.

People suicided as a direct consequence of his actions. He destroyed peoples' lives.

I hope he lives a long time.

"...how often does Madoff deserve have his nose broken, his ribs fractured and his head and face cut ?..."

Well golly, it depends on how quickly he heals.

If there was true justice, he would have been executed, along with his sons and other family members who were complicit in his crimes.

Why would prison officials put a high profile prisoner in general population?

To make sure he gets the @$$ kicking(s) he deserves?
