The possibility has been raised that Pope Benedict XVI should resign over the snowballing paedophile priest scandal in the Catholic Church. The BBC's Vatican correspondent, David Willey, examines the question.
In theory, there is nothing to stop Pope Benedict taking a piece of paper out of his writing desk and drafting a letter of resignation to hand to the College of Cardinals, the supreme electoral body of the Catholic Church.

Are you SERIOUS???? The Pope is the direct lineage of St. Peter.....but I’m SURE you KNOW this, you just don’t want to admit it.
Wouldnt be the first muslim to try and knock off a pope.
Wouldnt be the first muslim to try and knock off a pope.
How about the president of the NEA resigning over the epidemic of pedophilia in our schoolrooms?
The architect of that gets a Cabinet appointment instead of resigning.
Exactly. I saw something about this on an obscure anti-Catholic web site a couple of days ago.
“In theory, there is nothing to stop Pope Benedict taking a piece of paper out of his writing desk and drafting a letter of resignation to hand to the College of Cardinals, the supreme electoral body of the Catholic Church.”
And, in theory, there is nothing to stop a BBC correspondent from turning on his PC, sending a brisk letter of resignation to his printer, signing it with a flourish, dropping it in the inter-office mail, and departing for other climes to raise Angora goats.
Thanks for getting my drift. This is “fabricated” news.
It smacks of the same garbage the commies in the US are now saying about the so-called violence in the wake of the congressional assault on our liberty. There’s a pattern emerging. Whispering campaigns. It’s scurrilous.
It is a very sad situation for the victims. It is disgrace to the Church. Pedophillia is an disgusting crime, even moreso when practiced by a wolf in sheep’s clothing and protected by those who claim to be shepards.
It’s too bad the Vatican is being trashed seemingly unfairly. Still the whole scandal is so repulsive and the cover up so deep and wide-spread that it seems only proper for the pope to take the heat as much as the local bishops who were involved. The Church is an institution and it is going to be seen as a whole, and right now it is very, very tarnished one and rightfully so. When you do bad things that allow your enemies to attack you it is your fault not theirs. You get what you deserve and more.
Anyone who makes excuses for the Church at this point is not accepting reality.
Not making excuses, but, didn’t we already do this? Or, is the great forward-thinking Europe this far behind US?
no, it is the anglicans trying to stop the flow of their flock into the Catholic church in England and the U.S.
“Only one Pope has ever resigned (Celestine V back in 1294)...
Yes. He resigned after being arrested and probably murdered. He died in prison.
(From the beginning, he didn’t want to be Pope but was forced into it.
Up until that point, he loved living like a hermit. He abhorred public life.)
The Kenyan should resign.
The abuse of children in the government schools is far more widespread. (Not to mention the abuse by murder of children before they are born.)
“if he were to be kidnapped by the Nazis he was to be considered to have resigned, and a successor should be chosen.”
Adding to this, he also stated in the event of his kidnapping, he would be referred to by his real name and not as Pope Pius XII (not Pius VII). This way, the Nazis could not say and brag they had arrested the Pope.
P.S.
I didn’t make myself clear...Celestine V never resigned...while alive. I was having fun with you. He was murdered THEN he resigned.
cretin
And yet, the architect of it all, the modern enabler of the official policy of state-sanctioned schoolhouse pedophilia, Kevin Jennings, is a Cabinet member.
Does Christopher Hitchens call for his arrest?
"As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are certain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction." 2 Peter 3:16
Perhaps you are directing your comment at someone else?
Look the RC church suffers greatly from the abuse of children by priests. To deny that this has happened and try to sweep it under the rug is evil. This has nothing to do with O. It has everything to do with calling to accountability those who have ruined your church.
