PHOENIX, Arizona -- Behind a Dunkin' Donuts in a shopping center on East Cactus Road, J.D. Hayworth's Senate campaign headquarters has a low-budget look. Near the front door, pinned to a cubicle wall, is a campaign T-shirt proclaiming Hayworth "The Consistent Conservative," offered for sale at $15 each. Volunteers are stuffing envelopes at a folding table that holds seven telephones, the phone lines dangling down from the ceiling. A large bulletin board is festooned with letters from supporters, including a woman from Dewey, Arizona, who wrote to say, "Sock it to him, please!"
The "him" is, of course, Sen. John McCain, the Republican Party's 2008 presidential nominee and the man whose involuntary retirement from the Senate is the goal of Hayworth's candidacy.
Hayworth sits behind a desk in his office, signing thank-you letters to contributors who have given about $800,000 for his "Million-Dollar March" online fund-raising effort, and reflects on the central irony of this campaign: McCain, an outspoken advocate of "getting the big money out of politics," is spending big money in an all-out effort to destroy Hayworth's primary challenge.
"Obviously, the gulf between my opponent's rhetoric and the reality is so great it exceeds the geographic dimensions of our own Grand Canyon," Hayworth says. "It's more than a credibility gap, it's a credibility canyon.… If he was really concerned about [the influence of political contributions], he certainly seems to have gotten over it very quickly."
Whether McCain's big money will be enough to secure his re-election, it undoubtedly gives him advantages against Hayworth, whose low-budget campaign doesn't expect to match the incumbent dollar-for-dollar in the five months between now and the August 24 primary.

INDEED!
McCain is steeped in money from special interests to push legislation,usually in committees that he heads. His campaign ‘reform’ was really more about covering his big donors and his own corruption.
We know about the Indian money he exempted from his CFR, so they could give him ALL the money he wanted while being head of the Indian senate affairs committee.

Days before Senator John McCain joined hands with Senator Bill Bradley last month to decry the noxious influence of special interest campaign donors, McCain pressured the Federal Communications Commission to vote on an issue that cleared the way for a major contributor to his presidential campaign to buy a Pittsburgh television station.
Speaking generally, however, McCain said, ‘’People give money to buy access. We’re all tainted by this system.’’ From time to time, he said, he has agreed to meet with major donors. ‘’They have access, and therefore they have influence. It corrupts the system. And I’m a victim of it too,’’ said McCain, who was ensnared but later cleared in the so-called Keating Five scandal nearly a decade ago. He was one of five senators who interceded with federal banking regulators on behalf of Charles Keating, whose name became synonymous with the savings and loan scandal that cost taxpayers billions of dollars.
McCain’s insistent urging that the FCC vote on the Pittsburgh issue had the effect - if not the intent - of benefiting Paxson, a West Palm Beach, Fla., network of 73 family-oriented stations and the nation’s largest owner of independent television stations. Through the end of September, Paxson’s top officers and their family members - and even the personal assistant to the wife of the company’s founder, Lowell W. Paxson - contributed $12,000 to McCain. In 1998, Paxson officials gave $9,000 to McCain.
And in July, as Paxson lobbyists were asking members of Congress to exert pressure on the FCC, 13 members of Paxson’s law firm, Dow, Lohnes & Albertson, contributed more than $8,000 to McCain on a single day, according to campaign finance records.
Sometime between McCain’s first letter on Nov. 17 and his more insistent letter on Dec. 10, Paxson made its four-engine jet available to ferry McCain and his entourage from New Hampshire to Washington on Dec. 3, a day after McCain declared in a New Hampshire appearance:
Though McCain’s committee has oversight of the FCC, there is no evidence that his May criticism affected the FCC’s decision to allow the mammoth SBC merger. Two weeks later, however, McCain filed legislation to strip the agency of its say in telecommunications mergers.
But on the Pittsburgh issue, officials familiar with the decision said McCain’s involvement was more problematic.
Take it to the bank: Should Hayworth lose he will still support McCain for Senate. If McCain loses he will throw his support to the Democrat.
Time to donate again!
None the less, McCain has got to go. He was a horrible presidential candidate, is a reliably frustrating Senator and should have been term limited out of Arizona politics a decade or so ago.

One thing that makes me really hopeful about J.D. is the last two years working as a conservative talk show host in Arizona. He’s listened to the people, he’s heard them.
Ronald Reagan did the same thing before he was elected and I think it gave him a lot of insight and direction.
Well, if Hayworth wins, McCain will probably sit out the election, or clandestinely assist the Democrat.
He likes to use stealth in situations like this. Remember him having his election staff attack Palin after his defeat for him?
Hayworth will support McCain if he loses, as he is a stand-up guy, unlike the nasty little Leprechaun he is fighting.

Fortunately Hayworth does not need to raise as much as McLame....its not a national campaign.
Even with Soros and Palin behind him....McCain is in trouble. Obama wants to pass Liberal legislation McCain supports (Amnesty, Cap And Trade) and McCain is a filibuster breaking vote. There will be much pressure on him from Congress and the White House to pass the Big Government Liberal legislation

I feel for Sarah Palin. She got stuck on the wrong side of the border when the war broke out. Hopefully, after the 2010 elections, the world will have changed a bit and we can all re-group and continue to fight the good fight with a better team.
I heard him on Levin too (thanks Mark for having him on....and supporting him over McCain....good to see Hayworth getting air time).....I would not be surprised JDs site went slow last nite after his appearance.
Even though he may not hit the million mark....he raised quite a lot of money in such a short period of time. I plan to send more after my next payday.
