(LAS VEGAS) – Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada canceled giving his testimony at an LDS fireside last Sunday night because of angry calls, e-mails and even threats. The Democratic Senator is a member of the LDS Church and was invited to offer remarks at an LDS fireside at the Tule Springs Stake in Las Vegas. The fireside on “Why I Believe” was canceled after the threats were made. His press secretary said there were no threats of violence initiated against Reid but he canceled because of the threats against his invitation to speak. Sen. Reid received a warm welcome at BYU in October, 2007 and stands firm on his religious and political views. Reid has become a lightening rod in partisan bickering and faces defeat in his home state of Nevada in the upcoming November election. BYU political science professor Kelly Patterson says Reid hasn’t changed his position for years. UVU Professor Boyd Peterson is a Democrat and teaches Mormon literature at the university and says several Church leaders are Democrats. Some have asked if LDS Church leaders will speak about politics and civility at this weekend’s conference but no official statement has been issued.
Re: “Why I Believe”
Before Reid explains the “why” he needs to explain the “what”. What does Reid believe? And secondly, how does his life demonstrate that he truly believes what he says he believes? The Mormons I know don’t support the policies that Reid supports.
Harry Reid is simply a coward.
Do politicians ever look inward when their constituents are displeased? EVER?

I'm surprised we haven't the "anti-Mormon bigotry" charge from the Mormon Tab Choir of "Anti-Mormon labelers."
If anybody objects to Obama's policies, they are oft' labeled a "bigot."
If anybody objects to Pelosi's policies, they are at risk of being labeled a "sexist."
If people object to Reid, or even to the beliefs held by his church, they are labeled an "anti-Mormon bigot."
(People have trouble separating policies/worldviews/beliefs from what they deem as "core identities.")
Civility?
Don't make me laugh! The left was far from "civil" when Bush was President. Apparently they only want "civility" when they are in control (and destroying our country).
John D. Lee is no longer the most infamous Mormon in history.
Maybe he should consult with someone who has had REAL threats—like say, oh, Anne Coulter, maybe.
I think your post should read:
Anyone who votes for “Dingy Harry” is a moron.
Because Latter-day Saints don’t fit into your stereotype. Please stop trying to cause (or exacerbate) problems between faiths.
What a drama queen.
I know many Latter-day Saints who disapprove of Reid’s actions. And I know someone who answered question “#7” by saying “No, I’m not a democrat.” She said it was an organization that went contrary to the Church’s stated beliefs. Go figure.
It’s a rough world out there. Fight the good fight.
Well, I think we can gain some clues re: what Reid believes by paying attention to what he says when he's around his fellow religionists:
1. We know Reid in many ways is actually an orthodox Mormon (Lds leaders don't just let anyone become "home-teaching companions"): The Salt Lake Trib ran an article Oct. 23, 2009: ”Today, Reid, with his security escort in tow, likely will be making his home teaching rounds after his ward's three-hour service. (Reid appeared with other Mormon members of Congress a few days before Christmas to receive the local Mormon missionaries for a Christmas event).
2. As this article mentions, Sen. Reid received a warm welcome at BYU in October, 2007... At this event, he said: "I am a Democrat because I am a Mormon, not in spite of it." Source: Reid Gets Warm Reception at BYU Let's face it, LDS leaders just don't let anyone commandeer a wide-open all-invited, all-expected forum!
3. And I'm sure Lds leaders actually appreciated this comment spoken at that BYU event: "They [Evangelical Christians] are the most anti-Christian people I can imagine, the people from the Christian far right."
4. Beyond that, I'm still scratching my head as to why BYU would give this man a platform to utter other beliefs -- as he did -- like: "I think people in the church have to understand there are issues more important than abortion and gay marriage."
So Reid's spokesman said the Senator did not have his head up his arse, but canceled because the Senator's head is up his arse.

It seems to me that Lds leaders who...
...make Reid a "model" home-teaching companion...
...invite him to speak at an all-student, all-faculty BYU forum in October 2007...
...and give him an open mike to take pot shots at Evangelicals like he did...
...while downplaying abortion and same-sex marriage...
...shows that Lds leaders have already both "caused" and "exacerbated" major problems between faiths big-time!
(So. Have you been consistent? Have you commented to them the problems of putting Reid up on such platforms? Let's face it. If Reid doesn't "feel" the non-violent heat from either grassroots Mormons or Lds hierarchy he's going to continue to mumble and jumble along with both his home-teaching lessons on behalf of the Lds AND passing more things like socialist healthcare!!!)
I dont understand. If it wasnt a threat of violence, what was it? A threat to organize a demonstration pursuant to the First Amendment?
Or a threat to throw this crook out of office? Yeah, that must have been it.
Even if they agree with him, how insensitive is that to Mormons who disagree w/him?
The church keeps giving Reid a microphone yet curiously not Glenn Beck.
The church that changed from polygamist to non-polygamist, from Non-christian to claimed Christian, from racist to inclusive has also changed from John Birch Society level conservatism to Harry Reid Marxism in less than one generation.
Perhaps the real question is "I wonder how far the church will drift from it's original teachings in order to retain power after the collapse of the US ? "
A young man takes off his shirt for a calendar picture and is excommunicated. Harry Reid supports abortion rights, gay marriage, Marxism, etc, etc, etc, and he gets offered speech opportunities.
"Led by God at every turn ?"....I don't think so.
Well, I'm sure you'll be overjoyed about this quote from Mr. Reid:
""I think some of the most un-Christian-like letters, phone calls, contacts I've had were from members of the (LDS) church, saying some of the most mean things that are not in the realm of our church doctrine or certainly Christianity," Reid said last week during an interview in his office."
And now he's claiming that his fellow Mormons are threatening him. So, he, being a good liberal, doesn't particularly like anyone who disagrees with him.
