Wilma Mankiller, the once dirt-poor Oklahoma farm girl who grew up to become an American Indian and womens rights activist, author and the first woman to hold the Cherokee Nations highest office, died Tuesday. She was 64.

and (at the first one) the tribal leaders wouldnt let me talk. It was a real disaster. Afterward, I learned that I could cut off their microphones with one flick of a button, and I did.
I would never have the balls to do that, guess that's why she was so effective.
Apparently its a military rank
I met her when I was in grad school in 1972.
Sad to hear of her passing.
.America is no different...Europeans took over because they had a superior civilization..health..knowledge...tools..and they had many children....period...end of story..
...it has happened forever..
..even the "Indians" came from somewhere...who did they kick out before them?
keep all that in mind as we discuss the rising Mexican tide and the Islamists......those who out populate are going to be the winners every single time...
and I doubt the Islamists will allow us to keep our culture on reservation lands and award us casinos off reservations to earn billions in untaxed dollars...
there are poor tribes but then there are the extremely rich tribes.....
“She once said that white culture was to blame for the sexism of Cherokees, who were traditionally more matriarchal, and that Thomas Jefferson deserved as much blame for the Trail of Tears as the more often villified Andrew Jackson. “
Sounds like the typical modern Indian revision of history to me. Some of her Cherokee ancestors warned of becoming wards of the state, encouraged self sufficiency, education and self reliance. Many of them were assassinated (my ancestors) by the ‘take care of me’ Cherokee known as the ‘Pins’ who chose to blame any one but themselves for their misfortunes. Instead the Cherokee tribe, like most Indians preferred a victim status and generations of poverty and ignorance and that chip on their shoulder. Thomas Jefferson wasn’t to blame for that, they were.
I did think she was quite the Democrat liberal though.....
My thoughts are with her family....
The Cherokees were matriarchal before contact with the Europeans. I don’t think that is really in dispute. Doesn’t mean that Europeans were solely responsible for the changing attitude of course.
Regardless of the errors of the Indians, there isn’t a whole lot of defense for a lot of what was done to them.

Good points. Let’s not forget, the Indian...especially the Cherokee did as much damage to their own as the white man did. During the early 1800’s they were a very rich tribe, and probably some of the best educated people in the US.
Remarkably, PBS did a great series..”We shall remain”...the Trail of Tears segment really gets into the politics within the Cherokee tribe of the time. Their biggest problem was their Chief Ross, who actually reminds me a lot of Obama...he was 1/8th Cherokee with blue eyes and became a dictator for 40 years over the largest part of the angry tribe who were content to support or be bribed by him.

I met her at some jobs program in Tahlequah in 80 or 81 and then again in 88 when she started the horticulture program and The Cherokee Nation became customers of the company I worked for.

Yes, indeed they were and I have letters from my ancestors in the 1800’s, and believe me my grgraunt had plenty to say and said it well.

What the US government did to the Cherokee and many other tribes is inexcusable and tragic. The Cherokee won a supreme court ruling to maintain their nation in Georgia, but it was ignored. Where we err is in thinking it could never happen again. We ARE the current indigenous tribe.
May she rest in peace.
How did they know your name and address if you weren't born yet?
LOL
I didn’t say I ‘received’ the letters. I have copies. Most of the originals are stored at the Univ. of Oklahoma.
