Tea party endorsement catches Democrat Walt Minnick, his challengers off-guard
Idaho Statesman ^ | 4/16/2010 | Erika Bolstad

WASHINGTON - The most influential national tea party group, backed by a $3 million campaign war chest, surprised Idahoans by endorsing freshman Rep. Walt Minnick's re-election bid. Not all local tea partyers were pleased.

Minnick is the only Democrat in the nation to land an endorsement from the Tea Party Express, the most prominent national organization in the burgeoning political movement.

-- SNIP --

"We don't know where the national tea party came up with the endorsement of Walt Minnick," said Russ Smerz of Tea Party Boise. "It's a little concerning to us that Tea Party Express would endorse someone in the state of Idaho without consulting us first. We're not endorsing any candidate at this time - including Walt Minnick."

I’m still waiting for some form of gun legislation to hit the House floor. I’m pretty sure that Minnick is a “only for hunting and sporting purposes” guy so will vote for any renewals of AWB or whatever else the libs come up with.

Course on the other hand that is an almost guaranteed way to lose a seat in Idaho so will vote against if there is coverage.

Trying to find anything on the Tea Party Express website to confirm, but nothing there.

Could be correct in it being an erroneous report.

The Democrat party is simply unredeemable and evil. Anyone that seriously believes in liberty and the Constitution can never vote Democrat in state and federal elections. Minnick can never be supported.
This endorsement by a national organization cannot over-ride the local organization. Indeed this is an analogy for our current struggle: individual rights & local control vs the central authority.
The Tea Party movement will function at is best by emphasizing local control, much like a confederation. The central movement will soon be discredited if it does not consult the local movements.

Lotsa frauds in the Tea Party movement. Vaughn Ward is going to win that seat. A REAL American and conservative.

If he's pretty good and running against a RINO, endorsing him may actually be a good thing. It's a message to RINOs that they have to work for the Tea Party endorsement. They don't get it automatically just by running as a Republican.

That's why it's so important to take one or more RINOs (Crist, McCain, Bennett, etc.) down this year - to send a message.

theres nothing wrong with earmarks, only cept that its been abused. How else do state request funding from Federal government? Without earmarks, states has no say in how federal money be spend. You rather state decide it or federal government?

being against earmarks, makes it a negative for him. He support federal, centralised planning over distributed, decentralized state planning

My biggest problem with earmarks is that I don’t think they should be tacked onto unrelated bills to buy a vote.

If the project and/or bill it’s attached to can’t stand on their own they shouldn’t pass at all.

Related bills is fine with me, like hypothetically setting aside project money for forest replanting in a land management bill.

"I'm really not sure what to make of this."

"Tea Party Express" is obviously LAME to the extreme. That's what I make of it.

If Minnick was the kind of guy who deserved Tea Party support he would have endorsed Bill Sali in 2008 instead of running against him and voting for Pelosi. His 2009 American conservative union score is 44%.
