There'll be quite a scene in Washington May 19 if Mexican President Felipe Calderon keeps his date to address a joint session of Congress. He'll also be honored at a White House state dinner.
The cool, calculating and composed U.S. president is going to have his hands full that day trying to navigate diplomacy and the almost guaranteed uproar about immigration that will test decorum on every level.

mexico isnt a real country so whats the deal?
bttt
Thanks for another great essay again
Hey Calderon, when you pack up to leave take the millions of squatters who came from your country illegally with you!
I was REALLY surprised when a friend posted a ridiculous article from Huff Po about how this law was just like the hoses and dogs being called on blacks in the south. When I said A) that is ridiculous and B) if the Feds had done their job, the people in Arizona wouldn’t have had their hand forced to vote something like this in... 9 out of 10 VERY liberal, Los Angeles, vegan, hippy agreed with me!
I think this one could actually put in a two-thirds GOP majority in both houses.
Not providing the “relief valve” of illegal immigration to the United States
WILL
put pressure on their government to reform and be less corrupt. The people, not having this escape valve, will direct their heat towards the government.
bttt your post!
Yeah-—but what would Calderone do without his cut of the $50 billion they send home every year (/snix)?
Your first three sentences say it all! ;-)
Sounds like a perfect solution to me!
Bring ‘em into the fold and tax them!
I like the way you think! :D
A “legal hispanic”? I think you meant a legal resident (immigrant). My ethnicity is legal no matter where I am. The hispanic nature of my identity does not depend on laws or on self elected (appointed) “leaders” to define me.
I think the 40-year running average for all Cuban-Americans is about 14.8 seconds, give or take. This from Bob's Estimated Numbers and Bait Shack in Key West.
***If Mexico, with its same attitudes and corrupt politicians occupied the same physical space as the US, it would still be Mexico, and still be an underachieving nation. They have resources. As a nation Mexico has no one to blame but Mexico for its ills. We should . ***
If Mexico still had all the land west of the Mississippi River, it would still be so poor that we would have boats trying to stop the flow of illegals swimming into the US!
Good point. While Tejano Democrats continue to vote 70/30 Democrat, Bush and Rove managed to get about 40% of the "Hispanic" vote by getting a split of the Central American and South American immigrants (legal ones with citizenship). And the Cubans vote Republican, as witness the long, long career of Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in Florida.
In the longer run, education will begin to get more of the Hispanic vote; it's just those thick Mexican skulls that are resistant to the idea of voting for anyone but the same old corrupt ex-PRI guys who infest NALEO and MALDEF.
Thank you so much for this excellent wrap-up!
Ping!
Hard to tell, this could be a duplicate...
Bullseye!!
OMG, Arizona is demanding from illegals what Mexico demands from the CentAm illegals on her southern border.
Oh, the horror!
Outstanding commmentary !
