Canadians tend to lead longer, healthier lives than Americans on average, say researchers who point to lack of universal health care in the U.S. as one reason.
The study in Thursday's online issue in BioMed Central's journal Population Health Metrics was based on data from the 2002-03 Joint Canada/United States Survey of Health, which offered comparable data on the health of the population in both countries.
David Feeny, a dual Canadian/U.S. citizen and investigator at the Center for Health Research at Kaiser Permanente Northwest in Portland, Ore., and his U.S. colleagues calculated health-adjusted life expectancy, which takes into account not only mortality risk but also the health-related quality of life, such as being free of disability.

Is it comparing the total Candian population to the total US population, without taking into consideration ethnic distinctions in the data?
IOW, is it comparing apples to oranges?
So this is how those pesky passive agressive Frostbacks plan on taking over the US!!
Rioting in the streets is not good for one's health.
We score lower than Canada because dems are inflicting a lot of pain and discomfort on conservatives and because our libs score very low in the cognitive category.
The number of aborted babies + the number of black on black and hispanic on hispanic murders is probably near the entire Canadian death rate
LOL!
They have fewer Amish...
The survey itself did not say why Canadians are healthier
So, right there, they don't even get into exactly why Canadians are outliving Americans. They may have a different diet, deal with stress differently or not have as much stress ... I really don't know and this article doesn't even shed light on that. But it does seem to want to draw the conclusion that because Canadians have "universal-health coverage", that's the reason for their longevity.
Something else I spotted too:
The study did not include people who are institutionalized, and the researchers consider their findings an underestimate given the poorer telephone response rate in the U.S. survey, 50.2 per cent, versus 65.5 per cent in Canada. People in poorer health may have been less likely to respond.
So this was a telephone survey?!
Ahhh, studies. Where would we be without them?
Looking for honest work probably.
Comparing that place to the highly diverse United States is stupid ~ when you take take the ethnic differences into account.
Studies show that Americans of Scandinavian ancestry have the same life expectancy and are as healthy as Scandinavians!
I'd just bet Canadians of Scandinavian ancestry aren't in as good a shape as Scandinavians.
Be a rare Canadian medical researcher who'd dare take on the task of determining how how Canadians compare to their ethnic counterparts back in the home country. He'd get beaten down by a ruinous complaint to a human rights committee eh!
Lets just see how that works out when they can no longer come to the us for treatment.......
I’ll bet that on average, Americans are fatter than Canadians.
It’s their beer......
This will end when we pas UHC because they will have no where to go to get the treatment their system won't provide.
Snowbacks! We are snowbacks!
“This is just more of the same old same old. Canada is your basic good old fashioned “lilly white state except for some old Indians somewhere”.
Comparing that place to the highly diverse United States is stupid ~ when you take take the ethnic differences into account.”
Visible minorities (ie, non-white, non hispanic people, represent 16.2 per cent of the country’s total population.
This is comparable to the US, which is at about 18 percent. The biggest difference is that you have 15 percent hispanic people.
