U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday declared May Jewish American Heritage Month for 2010, calling it a time to honor "the invaluable contributions Jewish Americans have made to our nation."

Obama said in a statement that the U.S. has always been both a haven and a home for Jewish Americans, including those who arrived in the country "before America's birth" and those "who sought refuge from the horrors of pogroms and the Holocaust."

Probably, but this isn't the way to do it. Having a designated "heritage month" or "history month" is downright embarrassing. ...although I didn't quite realize the extent of the embarrassment until right now.

GWB picked May in 2006, as a followup to 350 years of a Jewish community in America. As a community that’s usually attributed to the arrival of a group of Jews in New Amsterdam fleeing Brazil. They arrived in September, but Spanish heritage month already claimed September and October, so I guess May was what was left. Don’t want any overlap.

I would have thought it was because Israel was proclaimed in 5/'48.
