Saint Paul police officer David Longbehn stood alone on a shady street near Lake Phalen on Saturday morning, one of hundreds on high alert during a tense hunt for two ex-cons who three hours before had gunned down a Maplewood officer in cold blood.
When a young man emerged from the woods behind him carrying a metal toolbox, Longbehn approached to question him.
Suddenly, the man attacked Longbehn and the two grappled on the ground. The attacker straddled the officer and hit him over and over again, breaking his nose and possibly the bones around both eyes. Finally able to reach his weapon, Longbehn pulled the trigger several times.
The man suspected of killing Maplewood Sgt. Joseph Bergeron -- an ex-con whose recent prison stint was for a double shooting -- collapsed onto E. Ivy Avenue.

Don’t know why I thought it, but my first thought was that the Amish were at it again.
I have to say, his hairdo is much better in the top photos than the unkempt do in the lower photo.
That’s because those pesky Amish are into everything.
since this was in MN, and there is a large Islamic population, I wonder if he converted in jail?
...Doe’s someone tip you off ahead of time or do you just set up the rutting season on your own???
...Naaa, that’s Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, before they got famous...
poor Ben Affleck, after Gigli his career was toast.
>”...Does someone tip you off ahead of time or do you just set up the rutting season on your own???”
The rut coincides with hunting season around here. And, around here, we dont need no stinking hunting season. But then again alot of it goes to feeding their families, which I can find no fault in.
...Never cared for Affleck as an actor, or his films. On the other side, Matt Damon, I do like some of his work. Seems like, pick roles carefully, like jobs, some times ya get burned...
and someone i know got over 5 yrs for breaking into a home with baseball bats and one shotgun and no one was actually hurt, just scared the crap out of the homes occupants. (there was a history behind this crime so it wasn’t random) I won’t defend the person he screwed up badly and got time. But according to the prosecutor it was the worst crime ever in this region of the state. (which is bull because there are many in which people have been actually injured or died, most of those involving minorities)
“...I wonder if he converted in jail?”
A lot of them do.
Damon seems to have used a better method of choosing which films to make.
Update......
“Charges: Cop shot in head, his seat belt buckled
Joshua Martin was charged as an accomplice in killing of Maplewood Sgt. Joe Bergeron. ‘We smoked that cop,’ the charges quote Martin as telling a friend.”
ugh
Bury him under the jail.
“Martin is on suicide watch.”
No death penalty in MN.....let ‘em do it....
Bail??
He needs a rapid proclamation for the death penalty!
I stopped at the local pump-and-munch on the way home from work today. You know the one. It’s in a marginal neighborhood and there is usually a cop in there “having a cup of coffee”.
The place was packed tonight and there were some real long faces......
