Harry James McCullough took it personally. The former security guard was standing at a Walgreens checkout counter when he saw two masked men, one with a sawed-off shotgun, enter the store. Marquail Thomas, 18, pointed the shotgun at customers and yelled, “Nobody (expletive) move!''
“There's no doubt in my mind what they were going to do,” McCullough said Thursday. “There was no time to react. You only have one chance.”
McCullough pulled out a pistol and shot Thomas four times. Thomas collapsed outside the store and died later at a hospital.
McCullough chased down the second masked man, whom Omaha police have identified as Angelo Douglas, 17, and held him until officers arrived. Jauvier Perkins, 15, who police said was the getaway driver, was arrested Wednesday.
Prosecutors said all three are known gang members.
McCullough said he had no idea whom he was dealing with.
“I took it personal,” he said. “I was the only one in that situation that could have made it any better, so I took action.”
McCullough said he never expected something like this to happen at his neighborhood drugstore, which he visits at least once a month to pick up a prescription for migraine headaches.

This was not an act of vigilantism. That would occur if a group of armed men went to the house of gang members to seek retribution for a crime committed by members of the gang.
This was a fortuitous act of self defense, stopping a threatening murderer in progress of shooting innocent victims.
I trust he has been given a gun to protect his home and family from the vigilantism of gang members.
That'll get the job done.
While it would be a chance thing, it's not all that amazing. 12 gauge shotgun's bore is .730 inches in diameter, plenty of room for even .45 bullet, and chances are he was using something smaller.

Do the police make the law?
As a rule they are. However the police hierarchy is not.
The refusal to give him a permit to own a new gun because of the ticket IS NOT a law. That is policy that was formulated by the Police Chief.
As far as the other examples given, I have not tracked them down, but they sound like policy rather than laws. Do you actually believe that there is any law requiring the State Patrol to NEVER give a concealed carry permit to someone who has a MISDEMEANOR ticket for carrying concealed without a permit?
If it is policy, it means the POLICE are the enemy, not the politicians.
Yes. This is what makes it doubly screwed up.
Those are the type of people that really make me wonder what goes through their mind. It’s the same mentality that thinks a shooting isn’t justified if the good guy doesn’t let the bad guy shoot first. It’s like some bizarro world of self defense.

Alternate answer: Because five wasn’t enough and seven was too many.
I would say if being accused of unlawful carry was enough to deny someone a permit to purchase without being convicted, he should have standing to bring an interesting court challenge.
If someone is accused of a felony in Omaha do they loose their right to vote, or do they actually have to be convicted before that right is revoked?

That he put one down the barrel isn’t out of this world. In the early 90’s, I took a course from Jim Cirillo (and his partner, Al), the NYPD cops who had been in 17 shoot-outs with NYC’s gremlins in their career. He said that people often get a tunnel-vision fixation on the weapon - and that in shootouts, too often the person responding to the perps aims tightly in on the weapon, not the perp himself. That’s what sounds like happened here.
This can work against the good guy if the perp has the long gun mounted on their shoulder, for example. The good guy moves his “fixation” zone up and to his left (to the perp’s up and right” to put it on the gun - and some of their shots easily go high and wide.
Cirillo said that it takes either lots of training or “as in his case, lots of real-world practice” (he had* a outrageous sense of humor) to learn to aim for center of mass, no longer how much you want to fixate on the size of the hole in the end of the shotgun.
On that, Cirillo said “The hole on the end of a 12 gauge looks like you could walk right up the thing when it’s pointed into your face...”

Eating a box lunch at the range with Jim and Al while they told us stories of Mayor John Lindsay (one of the most notorious of the RINO’s in the early 70’s in US politics), neighborhoods of NYC and the activities of the NYC Stake Out Squad was one of the high points of the class. He and Al had us all rolling on the ground, choking on our food half the time, nearly wetting ourselves the other half of the time.
If it hadn’t been that we were there for self-defense training, it was worth the price of the course for non-stop comedy.
