Among the many reverberations of President Obamas election, here is one he probably never anticipated: at least 32 African-Americans are running for Congress this year as Republicans, the biggest surge since Reconstruction, according to party officials.
The House has not had a black Republican since 2003, when J. C. Watts of Oklahoma left after eight years.
But now black Republicans are running across the country from a largely white swath of beach communities in Florida to the suburbs of Phoenix, where an African-American candidate has raised more money than all but two of his nine (white) Republican competitors in the primary.
Party officials and the candidates themselves acknowledge that they still have uphill fights in both the primaries and the general elections, but they say that black Republicans are running with a confidence they have never had before. They credit the marriage of two factors: dissatisfaction with the Obama administration, and the proof, as provided by Mr. Obama, that blacks can get elected.
I ran in 2008 and raised half a million dollars, and the state party didnt support me and the national party didnt support me, said Allen West, who is running for Congress in Florida and is one of roughly five black candidates the party believes could win. But we came back and were running and things are looking great.

I’ll wager that Barry never thought this would happen.
I think you’re right!
This guy is going to beat Steny Hoyer.

Snip:
My name is Charles Lollar and I want to represent you in the United States Congress. I am not a professional politician, I dont represent any special interest group and Im not famous enough to be considered a celebrity. Many consider people like us to be just ordinary, but you and I know better.
I could care less what color or race or gender a candidate is. All that matters is whether or not the candidate is a conservative (fiscal AND social).
She looks good!
Just a little reminder...remember Steele.
We must not run wildly in the wind...
whatever that means.
Agreed. However, you have to admit that this does make the heads of the race and grievance pimps explode.
This is long overdue.
Agreed. I'm pleased as punch to see black people coming home to the Republican party. All four of my (black) grand parents voted Republican their entire lives.
Of the two succeeding generations, just myself and one of my brothers managed to escape the liberal Democrat mind control plantation.
Hopefully, lots of blacks will be disgusted enough with what Obama's doing to the country that they'll give these up-and-coming black Republicans a listen.
Oh Good! It’s past time.
Like many conservatives, I do not care what skin tone my congresscritter sports. He, she or it just needs to vote for smaller, less intrusive government.
Fantastic!!! I don’t care about color, I care passionately about policy and leadership. Allen West is astonishing in both of those attributes. I wish he could run in my state. Good for him..and all others that are stepping forward to run.
“at least 32 African-Americans are running for Congress this year as Republicans”
Excellent!
Let’s hope black voters are going to take a second look at the GOP and realize that it is the party of opportunity and freedom, while the Democrats just want to keep them dependent on the government, in serfdom.
I think that Marvin Scott won the Republican primary in Indiana to oppose Andre Carson.
Wonderful news!
I just read her platform on her website. She indeed looks great! I hope she wins in a landslide.
And what a bang up job Mr Obama supporter & Black TV News Network did.
