18-wheeler explodes at San Antonio refinery

SAN ANTONIO -- An 18-wheeler being loaded with fuel at a San Antonio refinery has exploded.

Television stations showed footage Wednesday of an enormous black plume spewing from the AGE Refining Inc. unit on the city's southeast side.

Refinery marketing director Jeff Morrow says the truck exploded late Wednesday morning at the facility that refines gas and jet fuel, but he had no other details.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood told KENS-TV that the fire had spread to the refining facility, and authorities were trying to assess whether neighbors should be evacuated.

United Steel Workers are the largest collection of refinery workers.

Photo’s of the dead?

You don’t understand the size of this fireball. There are not bodies left of these dead. As for dragging their names through public publications, no thanks. I’ve spent plenting of time in oil/gas/petrochem facilities. If I die in a fire, my family shouldn’t have to deal with press and grandstanders.

United Steelworkers is a union that donated $13 million to the Democratic party (and $0) to the Republican party in 2008-2009

And the statistics they list are from Obama’s Department of Energy.

As I said, these are folks with an agenda and I am looking for an outside, independent source to back up their statistics.

During both the coal mine explosion at one mine and the roof collapse at another, the jihadi websites were excitedly posting minute by minute reports. I don’t believe in coincidence.

Good grief, I meant photos of the dead taken while they were still living, of course! Oftentimes you see memorials of the dead in newspapers, showing photos of those who dies in coal mines, school shootings, etc. This is a huge story. You would think you would read more about the bereaved families and those who died.

“Perfect time to endorse light raid.”

Well, Raid is made with petroleum byproducts, so it may get more expensive. I hope they don’t screw around with the formula!;)

I certainly am glad we don’t see more of that.

Families should have their privacy in these times of loss.

What is the concern? Do you think Transocean made this up?

I am sooo glad I have a telecommuting job right now. It doesn’t pay enough to drive to work at $5.00 a gallon of gas. Bad part is that my wife just okayed me to buy an SUV or a truck. Won’t be able to afford to drive that anywhere.

Even though people freak about losing an oil well, that’s really not a problem. The problem is refineries, losing them really is bad mojo.

Yes, if all of them were reported, and the reports were national, it would seem like they were common. However, if the total number of static caused fires were also compared to the total daily number of vehicles that refill at each refueling station where a static fire occurred . . . I think the fear of this happening would be very low.

"If you want to believe it's deliberate you go right ahead and believe it. As for me, it's just an accident until someone proves otherwise. This exact same thing has happened too many times before for me to get a wild hair up my butt. "

I generally don't believe in accidents. I believe situations like this are caused by folks not paying attn., ignorance, or deliberate violation of safe practice/procedures. The probability that a fire would occur during the loading of A, or A1 jet fuel into a tanker in such an engineered environment is essentially zero. The fact that it occurred at all means that someone did something to change the conditions of the situation to cause the probability of fire occurring to be likely.

Oh dear the driver is missing, that looks bad. But it might be only that the driver is Mexican and they run like h*ll when they are involved in an accident.

I don’t want to believe the worst and the worst would be muslim terrorist, again.

"What I speculate happened here is that vapors from the loading event moved to an ingnition source."

There isn't supposed to be any ignition source in this engineered and controlled environment. If such an ignition source existed, someone must have brought it into the controlled area.

“looking for the driver”, doesn’t sound like the driver is in the truck.

Here’s been accounted for:

http://www.kens5.com/news/local/Reports-of-92876584.html?hpt=T2

........
Two people were confirmed as injured following the blast at AGE Refinery on South Presa. One of the injured people was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center in critical condition. The other was treated and released at the scene.

Another person originally listed as missing was found later in the afternoon. That person was not injured. It was reported that he was just out to lunch.
