Meet the Unemployable Man
Wall Street Journal ^ | May 6, 2010

The betting is that the Labor Department's Friday snapshot of the job market will show that employers added workers in April, perhaps even that the unemployment rate fell.

That would be good news, but not good enough. It's hard to exaggerate how bad the job market is. Here's one arresting fact: One of every five men 25 to 54 isn't working.

Even more alarming, the jobs that many of these men, or those like them, once had in construction, factories and offices aren't coming back. "A good guess…is that when the economy recovers five years from now, one in six men who are 25 to 54 will not be working," Lawrence Summers, the president's economic adviser, said the other day.

We're about to see legions of the terminally unemployed men and men who have never in their lives held jobs and it's going to be ugly.

Back in the 20s and 30s in Germany, these "unemployable men" became SA Brownshirts.

I hope it doesn’t happen to you, regardless of your age. Do not feel so secure yourself, looking down on others, passing judgment without knowledge. It took me a year to find a job as a worker in a warehouse; after making 90k a year as a system’s analyst. Now I work as a field tech computer/network man, making 15 per hour. And yes, I went back to school to no avail, and yes I’m 54 years old. Don’t be so quick to pull the trigger. It could happen to you.

You are wrong; you are being very ignorant. I have a degree with a 3.74 GPA. Used to be a programmer/systems analyst. I do not have a low IQ(maybe you do). I was a programmer for 7 years.

I am finishing up at a construction job at a sensitive US military installation. By my rough estimate, 40% of the workers are “Hispanic”, with most speaking very little English.

Earlier this week, the hotel our crew stays at had a crew of 12-15 Guatemalans doing yard work.(In my feeble Spanish I asked them, “What is your home country”) “Guatemala” was their reply.

I have had several friends from Canada & Africa try to get visas or Green Cards. It is a very difficult & expensive process. I have a hard time believing that most of the immigrant workers are here legally.

Immigrants are great. My ancestors were immigrants from England, Scotland, Mongolia/Siberia via the Ice Age land bridge to Alaska, etc. However, we need to follow the law or else change it. Make a “Guest Worker” category.

Correct. And for much the same reasons.

It could happen to ANYone including doctors, lawyers and dentists....and it is.

Hot shot lawyer at a big firm? Downsized and they are lucky they will be doing real estate closings or foreclosurs. Doctors - they may be totally screwed due to Obamacare. Dentists? Rough business.

Journalist? LOL!

Flying high during Bush owning your own business? I see restaurants at lunch that are empty.

Sadly many Americans keep watching TV and paying cable and sat TV bills and all the networks control all the channels and they are ALL for Obama. The fools pay to keep the propaganda going. Amazing.

Lighten up. If you'd read my post, you'd see I wrote of a difference between "unemployed" and UNEMPLOYABLE. I'm not talking about educated, hard-working men who are down on their luck. These men will eventually land on their feet. I'm talking about unemployable men lacking the education and ambition to compete in a modern workforce that requires both. There are no jobs for these men today.

Mirrors can be your friend at times my FRiend.

Think, engage, and react.

The order is important IMO.

Sidelining a huge part of an entire generation of men would waste human potential, create economic misery for their families and fuel political discontent.

Notice how they added that little tidbit at the very end....

Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!

FWIW, and a little off topic... Laura Ingraham interviewed someone this morning who said that the new trend is adult losers moving in with the parents. We all know that — but it’s worse. They’re actually taking Mom and/or Dad on job interviews with them. Supposedly, Home Depot is having to address the issue of how to conduct a job interview with an applicant accompanied by a parent. Good grief!!

I’m going to admit something I haven’t before. I am unemployed, and I’m a doctor. I was downsized from the conglomerate that I worked for. I’ve been looking for a position for a year now. And because of the non-compete clauses in my contract I have to look WAY outside of where I live. I may have to leave the state. The recession IS hitting everyone. I thought I was bulletproof in my profession.

Anyone remember how bad the economy was under Bush when unemployment was 5.5%?

Oh yeah. Obama Jr called those times, "the worst economy since the great depression."
