PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A 36-year-old man attending the second round of The Players Championship was subdued by a Taser on Friday.

Travis Parmelee, of Jacksonville, was charged with disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest without violence, said St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Dave Messenger.

Messenger said course marshals notified officers that Parmelee was yelling at players and being belligerent near the 11th hole. Officers responded and attempted to calm Parmelee down, but they said he became more combative.

They tried to take Parmelee into custody, but he resisted and was Tasered once.

“He was at the point where it was time for law enforcement to step in,” Messenger said. “Our goal is to escort people off the property, but it was clear he wasn’t going to go with us.”

You are wrong, these are on a precise voltage, amperage, and waveform that disables motor control.

The tazer isn’t designed to inflict maximum pain in order to shut someone down. It is designed to disrupt motor control, that is why people fall down and can’t resist.

If it was about pain, it wouldn’t work on drunks.

Don’t worry, he had something to help numb himself a little before he got tazed

It is precisely that kind of remark that shows an attitude not conducive to policing but rather controlling.....there is a difference.

I hope you are not a law enforcement officer.

It is absolutely “SHOCKING” what goes on at a golf course in this day and age.

The belligerent drunk was obviously a “LIVE WIRE”.

Yep...just up to the point where he became a conductor...

Being tasered at a golf match fit this drunk to a “TEE!”

And so, the authorities continue to drive a WEDGE between the golfer and the (slightly intoxicated) fan.

You volunteer to tackle the guy then and why wrestling with him find he has uncapped needles in his pocket that poked you during the struggle.

You go home and tell your wife you need to get aids tested.

Some of the people on this thread think we are living in the 40s.

I don't know, I think tasing him might be a little ROUGH.

if he resisted arrest I say taser the guy.. why should a cop take a chance of getting belted in the mouth by a drunken dumbass

You have my vote for most clear, concise, and logicial blog post that I have read today...

Consider your thoughts seconded.

Is the purpose of the Taser to disable people who are verbally combative? The Taser is suppose to be a less-than-lethal alternative application of force. Could anyone argue that the next level of force to remove a drunk fan and unarmed fan would be to shoot him?

Don't get carried away here. The immediate goal of the police was to get him to leave the venue. He refused to comply.

ZAP! ZAP!! Any questions?

"He was charged with resisting arrest without violence. How combative does that sound?"

He was charged with resisting without violence (a misdemeanor) because he probably did not verbally threaten or fight the officers (a felony) or maybe they just cut him a break because he was drunk.

I”m hoping that this tasering event is not becoming “PAR” for the “COURSE!”

You're making my point for me. Thanks. Your words, "he probably did not verbally threaten or fight the officers", yet, they tazed him anyways.

I see you've adopted the motto of the statists - comply or be punished.

Bootlickers are loathe to admit that the application of a taser comes with inherent risk. The police, while not threatened themselves (according to you) applied force that is known to have caused death in victims that have some preexisting conditions.

If the guy becomes violent, then I have no problem with the police escalating. But it FIRST has to escalate, at least it should in a free republic. The police responded violently to a non-violent disturbance and that in and of itself is troubling, or at least it should be.

If golf becomes rowdy this could “DRIVE” fans away!

I see the bootlickers are out in full force this morning.

In other news...

Today: 10's of thousands of people were not tased by jackbooted thugs at a golf tournament today. It appears they satisfied their bloodlust by tasering some innocent drunk nitwit. Thankfully, they did not go on a maurading rampage tasering the thousands of other there.

Tonight, on our ten o'clock news we will investigate whether this was because the other 10's of thousands of non-tased people were licking their boots, or if the thugs new green policy is limiting their access to effective batteries...

Tasering seems excessive, but in reality, could it be the most FAIR WAY to deal with disorderly fans?
