New Alarm Bells About Chemicals and Cancer
NY Times ^ | May 6, 2010 | NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF

The President’s Cancer Panel is the Mount Everest of the medical mainstream, so it is astonishing to learn that it is poised to join ranks with the organic food movement and declare: chemicals threaten our bodies.

The cancer panel is releasing a landmark 200-page report on Thursday, warning that our lackadaisical approach to regulation may have far-reaching consequences for our health.

I’ve read an advance copy of the report, and it’s an extraordinary document. It calls on America to rethink the way we confront cancer, including much more rigorous regulation of chemicals.

Traditionally, we reduce cancer risks through regular doctor visits, self-examinations and screenings such as mammograms. The President’s Cancer Panel suggests other eye-opening steps as well, such as giving preference to organic food, checking radon levels in the home and microwaving food in glass containers rather than plastic.

In particular, the report warns about exposures to chemicals during pregnancy, when risk of damage seems to be greatest. Noting that 300 contaminants have been detected in umbilical cord blood of newborn babies, the study warns that: “to a disturbing extent, babies are born ‘pre-polluted.’ ”

It’s striking that this report emerges not from the fringe but from the mission control of mainstream scientific and medical thinking, the President’s Cancer Panel. Established in 1971, this is a group of three distinguished experts who review America’s cancer program and report directly to the president.

One of the seats is now vacant, but the panel members who joined in this report are Dr. LaSalle Leffall Jr., an oncologist and professor of surgery at Howard University, and Dr. Margaret Kripke, an immunologist at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Both were originally appointed to the panel by former President George W. Bush...

About 5% of the sodium in your body is included in your cellular structure.

I read a quote in the local metro paper... they said that while the causality wasn’t definitely linked, the gov’t should still act.

Oookaaaaaaaaaayyyy....

Do you ban a substance that may save lives such as clorinated water. A small amount of organochlorines is produced which may produce a 1/1,000,000 lifetime risk of cancer but has saved millions of lives since its introduction?

Completely agree. I think the fundamental problem is that most people don't have - and never learn - a sense of history period - let alone the massive benefits that modern practices have for the well being of society as a whole.

That creates a big hole in a place where a standard of comparison should have been in my opinion.

It is really a shame that epidemiology is not tought to the vast majority of students.

If not true epidemioligy, basics of risk (and statistics) at least. Not to mention basic cost benefit analysis. Ethics will have to be addressed, but the current approach of assessing only the risks and not the benefits is a very serious problem as you very correctly point out.

Nothing about polyps is any more “pre-cancerous” than any other part of the intestine. Polyps are the result of prolonged cronic high blood sugar, just like skin tags, which are like polyps, annoying, but not indicative of cancer. Just a big money maker for dishonest doctors.

Prove it. Show me the peer-reviewd paper, the statistics, anything scientific. So all these doctors got together and decided to foist this huge conspiracy on the public. Not only does the conspiracy span every specialist and GP but it spans generations of doctors of multiple specialties as well as medical researchers.

You, on the other hand, can be trusted to know the truth without having to demonstrate any data or research or credentials. And you preach this truth without hesitation and with utmost confidence while mocking anyone who disagrees, as if they belong to a minority of fools.

Very convincing.

Prescription drugs are all un-natural and deadly

Does that include antibiotics? Seems that I have had opportunity personally and with loved ones where those were very useful in preventing death.

We are designed to consume only once-living substances

How about water? Last I checked - water wouldn't fit that bill...

If we ingest things that are not once living, we must destroy some of our own cells to deal with those substances.

Like water?

In elemental form yes; but the Na+ ion (as it exists in NaCl) is not markedly electronegative...

Cheers!

Everything
Everything gives you cancer

Haven't you got the memo yet?

White mice cause cancer!

(They're the only factor in common in ALL of the experiments...)

Cheers!

Like to be facetious?

Bad habit if you ever expect to be taken seriously.

AFT antibiotics, you can make whatever unwarranted assumptions you wish, but you cannot produce any hard evidence to support them.

Thrush is for people that depend on antibiotics.

Great line of BS, but Doctors for the most part are well aware of the facts that I presented, and use them in their diagnostic analysis all the time. I first became aware of it from a paper by Dr. William Campbell Douglas.

The chief cause of colon cancer is excessive iron, usually caused by eating improperly slaughtered beef. Up until the ‘60s beef was slaughtered by cutting their throat, which allowed the blood to drain fairly completely, but presently they are simply thumped on the head by a pnuematic hammer, which allowes most of the blood to remain in the carcass, thus blood consumption by beef eaters is five or six times higher, resulting in that much more iron in the diet.

No, not in the structure, but in the electrolyte that is spread through the body. Less than 0.5% of the sodium is cellular.

You’re making serious mistakes. What is your science background. Surely it’s not the one book.
Take a look at the junkscience.com site.

“DDT”

.
Has it ever occured to you that DDT may have been banned BECAUSE it saves lives? (without any other provable effect; the pellicans were thinned out by the ‘environmentalists’ that invaded their breeding grounds in the late ‘60s and destroyed their eggs)

Utter rubbish. Cows (and pigs for that matter) are stunned and bled out. They actually die from the exsanguination.

You don't know what you're talking about.

I grew up the eldest son of a hospital dietitian that spent her life trying to educate doctors on human nutrition, mostly to no avail because they recognized that real healing meant loss of return patients.

Its been drummed into my head too long to just let the mendacious dissuade me. It has worked for me and my family. I’m 65 years old and never had any serious illness. I’ve been to a doctor six times; five of them for employment physicals, and once for an injury when I crashed a dunebuggy and my friends dragged me, kicking and screaming, to a hospital. (once there I wouldn’t let them do anything but one x-ray)

“and declare: chemicals threaten our bodies”

Chemicals are very bad for our health. One of the worst is dihydrogen monoxide.
They are finding it everywhere. Most human and animal tissue and blood samples are now showing high levels of it.
Organic food is not immune either; and are showing high levels of it.
It has even been found in baby food.
It has many uses; in pesticide production and distribution and many other things.

People really need to wake up and do their research.

Sorry, but they are cold and stiff before they are cut, and little blood is ever drained. The hammer does the job.

Its ok, Obama is going to send all of our dihydrogen monoxide to China to pay our national debt.
