How did such a draconian anti-immigration bill pass in a state where the pop. is 30% Hispanic?
The American Prospect ^ | 051310 | Gabriel Arana

Nogales, Arizona's largest city on the Mexican border, is situated about 70 miles south of Tucson, along a desert valley spotted with Spanish-era missions. Home to 20,000 people, 97 percent of whom are Hispanic, one would expect the city to be ground zero for impassioned demonstrations against SB 1070, the controversial immigration-enforcement law signed by Gov. Jan Brewer three weeks ago. But for the largely immigrant community here, the prevailing sentiment is one of resignation -- and fear for those relatives and friends who are here illegally.

"My friends and I used to go out to eat on Sundays, but now you're afraid of just going out on the street," says Maria, an undocumented immigrant who has worked as a housekeeper for over 20 years. (Maria asked her name be changed to protect her identity.) "But that's the law here, what's there to do?"

Critics claim that the SB 1070 -- which criminalizes undocumented presence in the state and requires police to question those suspected of being here illegally -- will lead to racial profiling of anyone who looks Hispanic. The law has been denounced by civil-rights activists across the country. Opposition has been mounting within the state as well: the Tucson and Flagstaff city councils recently pledged to sue over the new law and various businesses have expressed concerns that a boycott will affect tourism.

>> “...now you’re afraid of just going out on the street,” says Maria, an undocumented immigrant

It appears to be working.

But I agree, it’s really a hugh and series mathematical mystery how a law like that got passed in a state where only 70% of the populus isn’t Hispanic... ;-)

Wouldn’t Mexicans want to implement immigration similar to that in force in Mexico?

Funny when I tested equipment at Yuma Proving Ground the legal Mexican Americans were the ones most pissed off at the illegals. Seems their families employment prospects and pay were heavily impacted. A good number like to tell you how their families had been in AZ before AZ was a territory. Don’t know the breakdown percentage wise, but am pretty sure they are alot of Mexican Americans who support the anti-illegal flood.

Draconian? Really? Oh, no, dear me, people have to produce identification upon being asked! It’s not like perfectly and obviously legal people like me ever have to show anyone my ID. What is this, Nazi Russia?

“’My friends and I used to go out to eat on Sundays, but now you’re afraid of just going out on the street,’ says Maria, an undocumented immigrant”

Good. I think that’s the whole point. To scare people that are breaking the law. It’s called—and I know this is an arcane legal term, but stick with me—”deterrence.”

How about three simple reasons.
(1) 70% aren't Hispanic and you only need 51%. (2) Many Hispanics who immigrated to the US legally are in favor of throwing out the illegals. (3) Illegal immigrants can't vote. So even if 30% of the total population are Hispanic, a considerably smaller amount of legal immigrants can vote and as pointed out in item 2 not all of them are pro illegal immigrants.

Massive fail. The liberal author just doesn’t understand why illegals aren’t counted among voters or proportionatley represented in the legislature. Moron.

People like this want to stay in the underground economy so they can avoid any type of payroll taxes.

I would suggest that all the people that don’t like Arizona’s law, go live on the border for a month. Just a month and then tell us you don’t like the law.........if you live through it.

For those illegal Mexicans that say the United States stole California from Mexico.....read your own history. Maxmillian sold California to the United States for a few million dollars. If California went back to Mexico, which you left because you didn’t like it, it would turn into the Mexican slum you just left. For all the Mexicans that came to the United States legally, learned English, went to school, got jobs here, pay their taxes.........welcome. For the illegals, go home. I really don’t care what happens to you. I along with millions of other Americans have had it with you and your gangs of slum lords.

Don’t you just love “undocumented immigrant”? Can you say “euphemism”, boys and girls? ‘Cause “illegal” just sounds, well, bad.

No person should be allowed to immigrate unless they also intend to ASSIMILATE.
They should take an oath upon entry to this effect,
and if found to be not working towards that goal,
deported.

Well said, and it is long overdue, time for American taxpayer to quit subsidizing the farming and hospitality industries by covering all these hidden costs for illegals to be in the US...

That is exactly what a person had to do when they became a citizen of Tejas (Texas) when Mexico owned and controlled it. That was the only way one could own land in the territory of Tejas.

They also had to convert to Catholicism.

Because it isn't "draconian"?

What did I win?

‘Cause “Hispanic” doesn’t mean “illegal alien” or “illegal alien sympathizer.” Plenty of “Hispanics” are lawful American Citizens who dislike illegal immigration and effects. They’re no different from any other American Citizen - 85% of which want to eliminate illegal immigration.

Except, of course, in the minds of Commie-Pinko tribalists.

because LEGAL immigrants oppose ILLEGAL immigration.

I have yet to meet someone who came to this country legally and in favor of CRIMINAL entry into the USA.

Little do they know that Arizona may become the new American hotspot for those of us needing some time among our own.
