A member of Arizona's top government utilities agency threw down the gauntlet in a letter to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, threatening to cut off the city's power supply as retribution for the city's boycott of Arizona. If Los Angeles wants to boycott Arizona, it had better get used to reading by candlelight.
That's the message from a member of Arizona's top government utilities agency, who threw down the gauntlet Tuesday in a letter to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa by threatening to cut off the city's power supply as retribution.
Gary Pierce, a commissioner on the five-member Arizona Corporation Commission, wrote the letter in response to the Los Angeles City Council's decision last week to boycott the Grand Canyon State -- in protest of its immigration law -- by suspending official travel there and ending future contracts with state businesses.
Noting that a quarter of Los Angeles' electricity comes from Arizona power plants, Pierce threatened to pull the plug if the City Council does not reconsider.
"Doggone it -- if you're going to boycott this candy store ... then don't come in for any of it," Pierce told FoxNews.com.
In the letter, he ridiculed Villaraigosa for saying that the point of the boycott was to "send a message" by severing the "resources and ties" they share.
"I received your message; please receive mine. As a statewide elected member of the Arizona Corporation Commission overseeing Arizona's electric and water utilities, I too am keenly aware of the 'resources and ties' we share with the city of Los Angeles," Pierce wrote.
"If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation."

"If you hypocrite politicians in LA city government want to grandstand about boycotting Arizona businesses, then be consistent. Tell your city owned utility, the LA Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to stop buying Arizona generated electricity. If you do that, I promise not to stand in the way of Arizona utilities releasing LADWP from their contractual power purchase obligations.

Arizona has the Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant. It is the largest nuclear generation facility in the United States.

You are confusing service territories (distribution) with power generation.
Duke, and every other regulated utility, has an obligation under law to provide electric service within that exclusive territory granted them by the state.
They are under absolutely no obligation to generate electricity, and in fact there are a great many electric utilities that have no generation facilities at all. Those pure distribution companies purchase all the power they sell from other generation companies which may or may not be regulated by the state.
The unregulated producers or Non-utility generators, are called IPPs, or Independent Power Producers, and they basically sell to the highest bidder, but they are under no obligation to sell to anyone. And unlike a regulated utility, they are not guranteed a certain rate of return as set by the regulators. They can make as much as they want or they can go totally bust if they don't run the operation correctly.
I got that but what about the water. CA can go to h*ll. They hat power plants and oil but they like elec.
Without Colorado River and Northern California water, LA would dry up and blow away within two years.

APS reports to our Corp Comm in AZ. The Corp Comm tells them how much they can charge us for electricity. If that is true, how could APS tell AZ to pound sand?

As a regulated utility, they would have to do as the Corp Comm says. If APS is currently selling some of the energy they produce into CA, they must either have more than AZ residents require or they can earn a better return in CA than in AZ. If the Corp comm says they can no longer sell in CA, should AZ taxpayers be made to compensate the power generators for the loss of revenue resulting from their elected officials’ decision?
First I don’t know if it is APS who is contracted as the supplier.
But AZ has ways of making electricity because we have power plants here. CA has a lack of power producers.
If CA doesn’t want the power I’m sure we would be able to find others in the Country that would.
Better yet...the criminals in L.A., wants to send an economic message...instead of cutting off the Arizona produced electricity...Start charging them twice as much, and demand payment in advance. Lets see how they like *that* economic message. That should make up pretty quickly for the rev venues lost from other transactios, while Arizona businesses cut better deals with other states/clients/customers.
Summers coming....those blackouts are going to be a bitch, and a lot longer....and with lots of LA denizens out of work...
Than why is LA buying 25%+ of their electrical supply from Arizona if Palo Alto can do it better/cheaper?
