Maryland: Governor O’Malley Signs Self-Defense Reform Bill!

Thursday, May 20, 2010

On Thursday, May 20, 2010, Governor Martin O’Malley (D) signed into law a long awaited self-defense measure giving Maryland’s law-abiding citizens the ability to protect themselves and loved ones from harm.

Senate Bill 411(PDF), sponsored by State Senator Mac Middleton (D-28), provides civil immunity from damages when force, including deadly force, is used under reasonable circumstances to repel an attack in the person’s dwelling or place of business. Pursuant to Maryland law, this measure will be effective on October 1, 2010.

Please contact Governor O’Malley and thank him for signing SB 411 into law. The Governor can be reached by phone at (410) 974-3901 or toll-free at 1-800-811-8336.

In Maryland??? This is outstanding!!!

The rats are smelling their own blood in November. I can't think of any other reason that they are backing off of their "duty to retreat" BS to recognizing the right of self defense.

This is an election year and he’s got a fight on his hands. The only reason why this was passed.

Governor Martin O’Malley (D) signed into law a long awaited self-defense measure giving Maryland’s law-abiding citizens the ability to protect themselves and loved ones from harm.

What O’Malley thought it said was a self-defense measure giving Maryland’s criminals the ability to protect themselves from law-abiding citizens.

This state has one hell of a ways to go to bring itself into the American norm when it comes to individual rights. Currently we’re ranked 50th in personal freedoms..

Me too. I left that socialist hell hole over a decade ago. Let’s get with the program Virginia, I don’t want to have to retreat in my own home, and I want to protect my property.

Good luck PA! It's too bad the GOP eunuchs in Albany, NY are also spineless and brain dead. They should add a similar Castle Doctrine amendment in the haggling for a budget if the rules allow it in Albany. Get the rats on roll call votes as much as possible.

True, but the laws here favor home defense anyway.

True, but here's the issue: the Castle Doctrine does more than give you the right to stand your ground. Such legislation usually protects you from civil suits on behalf of the attacker (or his family, if he is deceased as a result of attacking you).

It is possible that Balmer will go the way of Detroit.

It is possible that Balmer will go the way of Detroit.

Ditto Philadelphia, which is ironic, as arguably, back in the 1970s, PHL seemed less likely to go into decline than New York.

Both Balmer and Philly had the same problem as the affluent folks fleeing the city proper back in the 1920s. This didn't happen in New York, where the wealthy (for the most part) stayed in the city. Of course, Baltimore and Philly also lack Wall Street.
