Sandra Soto addresses Arizona's SB 1070 law at commencement. The student reaction was encouraging.
What did she say? La Raza BS? Good for the students. People are fed up.

Sometime, bringing the class of 2010’s critical thinking is simply a Boo.
Good for the students.
It meant she attempted to politicize the commencement with a diatribe against 1070 and the students flatly rejected it.

She started to criticize the bill. Got booed.
Went down the path of ‘encourages profiling.’ REALLY got booed.
Some of the crowd comments got ugly. Imagine that.

Yeah, I could have done without the “cut your hair” remark. Still, a group of college students flatly rejecting liberal agit-prop was encouraging.

Incredible how she was so willing to destroy a once in a lifetime event for so many just so she could have a platform for her drivel.
Great to see the PC professor find out the feelings of the audience.
She is dumber than rocks to go down that path.
What side were these kids on? Were they booing the law or the the professor’s “diversity”? Considering they have spent four years being brainwashed, it’s hard to tell.

For those of us who are reluctant to open up a YouTube video, or who would prefer not to, or who are blocked from YouTube, how about a synopsis of her comments and which comments were booed by the students?
Yet another “Professor of Gender and Wymyn’s Studies” who can’t wrap her super fine mind around the identical wording of SB1070, California’s Law, or US Federal law, and uses the hysterical “progressive” disinformation campaign to inject her poison into a graduation ceremony.
It was good to see that not all the students, even at a Social and Behavioral “Sciences” school, haven’t been totally indoctrinated by the leftist deceits.
Launching into a one-sided political diatribe at a commencement ceremony is disrespectful to the students and their parents. This is not the forum for such a presentation, especially by a member of the faculty. 70% of the people of AZ support the law, which was a product of the elected representatives of the state.
If this POLITICAL SPEECH happens at any of my daughter’s schools they won’t be able to go on while I am there.
Enough is Enough. Stop jamming your socialist...anti-law bullsh*t down our throats!

From the camera scanning the crowd, I think you’re right. The people actually had to PAY for the education and the salaries of the professors disagreed with having to pay for someone elses education.
Inside Higher Ed posted this text of her speech:
........”The new Arizona law generally known as SB 1070 is considered the strictest anti-immigrant legislation in the country and is explicitly intended to drive undocumented immigrants out of the state. One reason it has instigated a boycott is because to a whole lot of people, myself included, it appears to not only invite but require the police to engage in racial profiling. Before we had a chance to fully get our heads around the implications of either 1070 or of the subsequent boycott, our governor signed HB 2281, which is intended to eliminate any Ethnic Studies classes from public and charter schools in Arizona.
As I held hands with Middle and High School students who formed a human chain around TUSD headquarters this past Wednesday to protest this law, the children tirelessly chanted:
Our education is under attack, what do we do? Fight Back.
As a professor, someone who has committed her life to teaching, I was moved beyond words to see those children peacefullyin fact, beautifullyasking only for a chance to see themselves reflected in the lessons they are taught, the lectures that they hear, the textbooks that they read.
I was there with those children for two reasons:
First, Chicano studies, the field under attack in this legislation, is my own field of research and teaching. The law suggests that it is knowledge about marginalized histories and cultures that will divide us. That is, this law tries to shoot the messenger. As the young students told reporters repeatedly Wednesday, they have a right to learn about all sorts of diverse histories and cultural expressions. The second reason I stood with those children is because their education, like your education, matters to me. If I have been saying anything to you so far, it is that education has a public value. That is, your education will not only bring you a bigger paycheck. It will enable you to be a better fellow citizen, more productive, better able to participate in solving the challenges I and my peers have not been able to conquer. So the ongoing cutbacks in public funding of education, as well as the recent devastating cuts to our own university among others, are deeply worrying to me in that they strike at both the quantity and quality of education that this state provides to its people. I do hope that you will, like the youth I stood with on Wednesday, fight for public education. Now that you have completed your own education, please remember to leave the door open behind you so that other students may enter.
On behalf of the faculty of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and of the Department of Gender and Womens Studies, I wish you the very best. “
Considering her area of “expertise” the school administration and whomever was responsible for choosing her as commencement speaker had to have known that she would go down that road.

Based on the students' reaction, I have two pieces of advice:
To the proffessor - look for a new job, and
To the Alumni Association - make sure the professor is looking for a new job.
She is obviously either an idiot or a liar.
Yes, it would have been better if the remarks had been along the lines of "Read the law!" or "Quit Lying!" and "That's not what the law says!" or "Leave your political lies out of my graduation ceremony!" or even "Get off the stage, you lying harpie!"
Way better response than we could have hoped for.

One of the kids got a Doctorate there about six years back. The day was filled with similar leftist propoganda which wasn’t booed.
I think the issue is if the Graduates feel that a speaker is hijacking their ceremony they will get testy. If a professor or departmetn head is just reciting the standard line they will let them get away with it. In other words, these same students wouldn’t have let a speaker make a conservative diatribe about the new law either.
Like all young people, they are self-involved.
Sandra K. Soto is Director of Graduate Studies, Co-coordinator of the Chicana/Latina Studies Concentration, and affiliate faculty of English, Mexican American Studies, and Latin American Studies.
She holds a PhD in English from the University of Texas at Austin (with a focus in Ethnic and Third World Literature). Her interdisciplinary research agenda draws on Chicana/o and Latina/o literary and cultural studies, queer theory, and gender studies to offer innovative approaches to the overdetermined terrain of social relations, cultural representation, and knowledge production.
Her book Reading Chican@ Like a Queer: The De-Mastery of Desire (University of Texas Press, 2010), replaces the race-based oppositional paradigm of Chicano literary studies with a less didactic, more flexible, framework geared for a queer analysis of the discursive relationship between racialization and sexuality.
She is currently working on her second book tentatively titled Feeling Greater Mexico, which pursues unlikely connections between critical transnational studies and U.S. ethnic studies and focuses on the Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide.
Her teaching interests include Chicana/o and Latina/o literary and cultural studies, feminist theories, transnational feminisms, critical race studies, US Third World Feminism, and queer theory.
