Surprise: Pa. roads getting worse, study says

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pennsylvania's roads are getting worse.

A new report released Monday by the American Society of Civil Engineers says the state's roads get a D-minus grade. That's down from the D the engineers gave Pennsylvania's roads in a 2006 report.

The grade for the state's transit systems also went down, from D-plus to D-minus, while its bridges stayed at a C.

The ASCE says the state's bridges would be worse off if it weren't for stepped up efforts, including the use of $390 million in federal stimulus money for repairs.

But there could still be tough times ahead. Last month, the Federal Highway Administration rejected an Interstate 80 tolling plan that would have brought in nearly $500 million annually for transportation needs.

The 2010 Report Card for Pennsylvania's Infrastructure gave the state an overall grade of D-plus.

Yes I drive thru most summers. Between the perpetual interstate work in Wilkes-Barre, the I81 work that shut down 2 of 3 lanes last summer and the nonstop pot hole between Pt. Jervis and the NY state line I have a little experience. The bottom line is no matter how much the state collects the roads will never be appreciably better. LOL, that won’t stop taxes from going up tho and dim voters from believing the shtick. Frankly the electorate of PA seems not too bright....at least many of them.

Yep, right on. Winding up the spin machine to sell a whole bunch of tax increases and tolls. Since that means work for contracting firms this engineering society would be all over that.

Could they have the same problem that we have in Wisconsin - they take the gas tax money and use them for non-road use? Or are they taking the gas tax money and using it to subsidize mass transit, like choo-choo trains?

Pennsylvania has tried 3 times...and been denied 3 times...requests to toll I-80. Mainly because they had planned to use part of the money to subsidize mass transit in Pittsburgh and Philly. Federal law does not permit that. Now they are floating a plan to toll EVERY highway at the point that it enters PA as sort of an Admission Fee. WHAT PART OF “NO” DO YOU CRETINS NOT UNDERSTAND!!!

(the traditional problem has been distribution...Harrisburg and Philly got taken care of, roads in Western PA were left to rot. Jim Quinn from the Quinn and Rose Show did a parody song about this back in his disc jockey days)

We would occaisionally get Penndot jobs in the area and we weren’t sending them cheap stuff.

That was the asphalt that was going to repave politicians' and union bosses' driveways (at taxpayer expense).

Exactly, Rendell is sending all the Federal Highway funds to Philadelphia to subsidize mass transit, SEPTA.

What freaking amazes me is that the year after year it seems like many of the same stretches of road are continually being reworked., and yet I never see anything wrong. They just keep reworking the same stretches.
