Hmm... 122mm MRL is quite useful for shooting at escaping refugees. This is aimed at PLA across the border, just in case they have a 'funny idea.'

The Norks know that if there is a war, or a continuation thereof, that the Chinese will likely sieze their nuclear facilities. They are in the far north near the border, the Chinese helped them build them, of course.

Kimmy Poo is about to learn the same lesson that the Somali pirates learned when the messed with the Russians. You can screw with the Western Democracies their reaction is predictable, and you will usually get away with it. When you screw with another communist dictator your life gets very interesting, and usually rather short.

30,000 DPRK military personnel are required for such an effective operation as this. Locations are PyongyanBukdo and HamgyongBukdo areas. They expect trouble with China, a Chinese strike against the Republic apparantly. Reading on Japanese wires now, too. Work finished in Februar apparantly. These are mobile units alright.

Just to clarify, this is on their border with China? I saw the comment about the Chinese seizing their nukes. But if NK is trying to repel China on the North and defending against SK/US on the South then this isn’t your grandfather’s Korean War.

Holy crap!! I sure hope this doesn’t disturb Obama’s mini-vacation. He’s already going to miss out on part of it by having to go to the gulf for a photo-op.

In other news the suspicion that NK is about to collapse, could be another reason for guns pointed north.

My guess: Chia Head wants a war to get more materiel and food from China, and to solidify the NK army behind his son. So he sank the Cheosan to start tensions. But he forgot to ask Beijing.

Beijing summoned him to “discuss” his action. Chia Head went to Beijing a few weeks ago to ask the powers that be for forgiveness, and to beg for money and food and approval of his 3rd son to avoid a war or coup. Beijing said no. Now Chia Head has decided to attack South Korea to try to get what he wants.

Chia Head knows Beijing will pour over the border to take the nuclear facilities, the northern 200 km of North Korea, and to stop his war. But it will take a few days. Adding a few more weapons at that border may buy Chia Head another day. He’s hoping that will give him enough time to capture most of South Korea (and conveniently eliminate 4 of the top 5 generals of the NK army) and then sue for a truce.

China’s learned that peace pays off a lot better than war. They want no part of it. I won’t be surprised to find Chinese troops and materiel deployed to the border.

Odd move. Makes me wonder if Kim thinks China is going to make a move to overthrow him or make a grab for his nuke facilities.

The multiple rocket launcher is a nasty weapons system. The Soviets used it to good effect on the Eastern Front during the war to pound German assembly areas. While the explosion of the rockets creates minimal shrapnel it's the blast effect that causes most of the damage causing its victims to suffer massive bleeding from the eyes, ears, nose, mouth etc for any troops, or civilians inside the blast radius. While the German NEBELWERFER was a more effective weapon the fact was the German troops had nowhere near enough of them during the war.

I have been wondering about the rationale behind North Korea’s constantly provocative behavior.

Possibilities I have considered:

1) they really think they can win, resulting in attaching S Korea’s prosperity to them;

2) they know if the US gets involved & “wins”, the US will then help them afterward;

3) they have been encouraged/manipulated by certain other countries in order to distract the US & divide the US’ attention/military resources;

4) Post #31 (PugetSoundSoldier) “Chia Head wants a war to get more materiel and food from China, and to solidify the NK army behind his son. So he sank the Cheosan to start tensions. But he forgot to ask Beijing.”

We (the US) have a tendency to forget that we are not the main power throughout the whole world, and that others (in this case, China) may be of more concern/influence in the behavior/reasoning of other countries, such as North Korea.

I appreciate the comments by some of the knowledgeable people on this thread. They have increased my limited understanding of the region.

Thanks.
