LAT: Successful elsewhere, 'tea party' fails to find traction in California
LA Times ^ | 6/14/10 | Maeve Reston

Posted on 06/14/2010 6:44:57 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

At the election night party of "tea party" favorite Chuck DeVore in Tustin, Carole Mullner and her daughter Stephanie Perez were among the first to arrive. Outfitted in red T-shirts branding them as "insurgents" for DeVore, they enjoyed a rare moment of calm after months of campaigning for the Republican Senate candidate.

Mullner, an artist and member of the West Covina Tea Partiers, set aside her work in January to hunt down volunteers and raise money as DeVore's "ambassador" for the cities along the 210 Freeway. Perez, a 31-year-old member of the Chino Hills Tea Party, served in that same role in the Inland Empire.

As they waited for results, both women were candid about their distrust of the night's eventual Republican winners, Senate nominee Carly Fiorina and gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman.

They wanted to know: How did Fiorina get all those endorsements from anti-abortion groups, without any record to speak of? Could she recite passages of the Constitution, as DeVore can? Did she really need to keep her hair that short or was she eyeing a "sympathy vote" after her fight with breast cancer? And with all that baggage from her time as chief executive at Hewlett-Packard, why wasn't it obvious to other voters that Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer would "rip her up"?

"Nobody will work for her," Mullner said when asked whether her fellow tea partiers would fall in line behind Fiorina. She predicted that many would also watch the governor's race from the sidelines. Earlier that day, Mullner said, she had voted for conservative Larry Naritelli for governor to send a signal to Whitman and Steve Poizner that her vote was for "none of the above."

If I were the LA Times, I’d be much more worried about Sarah’s performance both in California and elsewhere. But they’ll conveniently ignore that - since it doesn’t suit their agenda.

Two things to note:

california hasn’t produced a competent conservative since ronald reagan.

tea party folks are non-confrontational and don’t go where they are not wanted/supported.

So apparently Kalifornia is lost...eastern desert folks excluded.

Poizner and DeVore both ran terrible campaigns...Tea parties are strong here in CA but a candidate needs to enter the race and explain how being conservative is going to help solve the state’s impossible mess it’s in.

I have no idea who this guy is. However I consider myself a tea party member and a Chuck Devore supporter who is now supporting Fiorina. This is just another story by the LA Times to try and sabotage the Republicans. Just consider the source of the article.

Ridicule is a powerful weapon, wielded quite adeptly by the California media and Hollywood elites.

Thank you for posting that. The more sanity in FR, in California, in the USA, the better.

I haven't been following the race closely but I agree with your thinking. Devore lost, it sucks but it is what it is, there's no point in allowing the good candidate to become the enemy of the "so so" candidate. I don't know how bad Fiorina is but she's got to be better than Boxer. Seems to me that needs to be the focus now. </My 2¢>

Geez, don’t the democrats realize the Tea Party is not a bunch of crazy radical lefties......? The Tea Party will simply unite behind the Republican nominee, throw the Incumbents out the door, and proceed with the next phase of taking back America.

The Tea Party is here to stay. We’re not a bunch of “Quitters” as the Media likes to label Palin and friends. Not at all. The Radical hippees are still around from the 60’s, and the Tea Party will still be drinking Tea when Obambi becomes a 2 yr Lame Duck in November and Harry Reid is fired.
We ain’t leaving town, we’re moving in, we’re nationwide !

Here’s the quick solution to California’s ills:

1. Elect a real conservative governor (RCG).
2. RCG announces plan to form commission to lead California through Chapter 11 restructuring.
3. As Liberals moan, scream and defecate on themselves, RCG issues PR describing proposed abrogation of state union contracts.
4. As Liberals begin to acknowledge that RCG means business and will not back down, an agreement is made to postpone Chapter 11 filing leaving limited time for state and unions to settle out of court.
5. As part of negotiations in 4. above, RCG pushes for massive cuts, real deep cuts in budget and size of government, so massive that substantial huge tax breaks and incentives are made to businesses and corporations headquartered in the state.
6. RCG uses threat of BK Court action to reform and restructure all of Cal government.
7. RCG pushes for AZ type law for illegal entry enforcement.
