Moscow: In one of the biggest show of military might since the collapse of USSR, Russia mobilised 20,000 troops and state-of-the-art weapons in a drill, with President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday asserting that his country is a "great" naval power capable of defending its interests.

Medvedev watched the impressive drills of the Russian Navy as part of the strategic Vostok-2010 (Orient-2010) wargames from the nuclear-powered "Pyotr Veliky" cruiser sailing in the sea of Okhotsk.

"Russia was and remains a great naval power capable of accomplishing tasks in the problem regions and is ready to defend its interests," Medvedev said praising the servicemen for "displaying high professionalism."

Over 20,000 men and 70 combat aircraft, 1,000 military hardware and 30 warships, including battleships of Black, Baltic, Pacific and Northern fleets, are taking part in Vostok-2010, the biggest ever war games in the Far East on the 'Chinese front' since the Soviet collapse in 1991.

As the supreme commander of the armed forces Medvedev sailed in to the Sea of Okhotsk on board the 'Pyotr Veliky' (Peter- the- Great) cruiser, famous as 'killer of aircraft carriers', Russian media reported.

The president watched how two Kamov Ka-27 helicopters dropped into sea sonar buoys to search in the operation to search and destroy "enemy" submarines.

The wargames began on June 29 and are to conclude on July 28 and involve the Russian military might stationed in the Eurasian part of the country from Ural Mountains, Siberia and Far Eastern military areas.

The U.S. devotes more than that to RIMPAC alone, currently going on off Hawaii.

This exercise isn't aimed at America. It's aimed at China.

Who re they trying to impress.?

We know what their Navy is, they know what ours is.

Maybe they are trying to impress China which is building their Navy.

Ceratinly we dont need to be impressed, unless Russian troops start marching down Pennsylvania Avenue Obama is not going to start anything and p[robably wouldnt even then.

Don’t be silly; I’m sure Obama would react to Russian soldiers marching down Penn. Ave. He’d set up lemonade stands along the way to keep his brothers refreshed.

Sorry, but you are wrong. That exercise is aimed SQUARELY at America, and no one else.

The Russians/Neo-Soviets and Chinese (and their allies) are planning to take us on sooner rather than later.

So which aircraft carrier has it killed again?

"the biggest ever war games in the Far East on the 'Chinese front' since the Soviet collapse in 1991."

At or even perhaps for....China and Russia have a love hate relationship now...both using each other but seeking eventual control over the ME Oil. Russia sees Israel as the thorn in their side in regards to their relatioship with the ME leaderships...eventually Russia will unite with the ME against Israel....China will respond to that in due course. IMO.

The Purpose of this exercise is to get ready for Peace Mission 2011, which is going to be the largest joint Russian-Chinese exercise to date.

The Chinese also have a large exercise planned in the region soon.

Russia and China are practicing to repel a US invasion of North Korea and to take Taiwan, as well as a US invasion of Vladivostok and the Chinese far east region (as stupid as that sounds, that’s the official reason for these exercises).

You are so right. People here are in denial about our coming annihilation at the hands of Russia and China. This is also true for the American public at large. The truth is just too frightening for most people to contemplate.
