Las Vegas Review ^ | Jul. 04, 2010 | LAURA MYERS

U.S. Sen. Harry Reid says he wants to strengthen Social Security, but he also says it's a "myth" that the government insurance program for the old, disabled and survivors is in financial trouble.

Sharron Angle says she wants to keep giving full benefits to seniors and others who have paid into the system, but she also wants to let young workers opt out and open personal retirement accounts.

No DemocRAT ever wanted to let go of Social Security TAX money — so they could SPEND IT! Angle’s idea is a great one, but the RATS will never support it. A new approach as she has where the younger workers can be grandfathered out to be able to invest their own money AND PROTECT IT is the best. It will be stolen otherwise as before.

scHarry Reid is a moron speaking in moronese. Reid talks like IOU's are as good as cash in the bank. I hope Sharron has the financial advisor smart enough to string scHarry out on this and make him start talking and spinning.

The primary beneficiary of any socialist program is the socialist politicians. When SS was installed, Congress spent the "excess" from year one, oh, as Congress drops off the obligatory IOU.

Every year our government tells me how much money they will “give” me when I reach retirement age (about 19 years from now until they make it even older).

Then they mention how much money my employer and I have “contributed” (love that word, like I made a choice or something) to the system. $222,000, plus $85,000 into the medicare program.

If I had that much money added to my current retirement account, I could retire already.

We need more of his ilk in charge.

I like his attitude in thinking that honest speak prevails./s

Yep, this is the way to go and it has been proposed before by others but always blocked by democrats.

[Reid] ... says it's a "myth" that [Social Security] is in financial trouble.

The Reid campaign ... claims that Sharron Angle wants to wipe out Social Security.

One would have to be very elderly to remember the last time that some prominent Democrat offered any creative new idea on Social Security!!! Reid is so darn predictable, sounding like a broken old phonograph record from decades ago.

Yo! Ms. Angle, ask Harry to explain this one as he’s pushing amnesty:

Harry Reid: illegal aliens “free loaders and scam artists”

OH! THE IRONY!

From John Lollipop..

“Reid, now an impassioned champion of amnesty for 20 million illegal aliens in America, once called illegal aliens “free loaders and scam artists” which he proposed to deal with in his Immigration Stabilization Act in the United States Senate in 1993.” That proposed legislation was introduced to the floor of the US Senate with the following press release, in part, issued by Reid’s office on August 5, 1993. “In response to increased terrorism and abuse of social programs by aliens, (I) today introduced the first and only comprehensive immigration reform bill in Congress. Currently, an alien living illegally in the United States often pays no taxes but receives unemployment, welfare, free medical care, and other federal benefits. Recent terrorist acts, including the World Trade Center bombing, have underscored the need to keep violent criminals out of the country.”

Reid thinks that if he can throw enough at Sharoon Angle, he can win. If he makes her the issue, he has a chance. But if the race is about Reid and his record, he has no chance.

Here’s a link to the questionnaire:

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/jul/04/reid-and-angle-go-toe-toe/

It’s interesting to read between the lines. Reid’s responses are filled with “feeling.” Angle’s responses are common sense, no BS. Thus, in every case but one, Reid’s responses are longer, but actually say less, than Angel’s.

I think it would be a good idea for every state to require proof of elgibility (ie; birth certificate ) and proof that candidates have passed basic high school classes in arithmetic before they are permitted to place their names on any ballot running for any thing!

Thanks for the link to the cadidates' answers to the Las Vegas Sun questionnaire.

What is Reid talking about when he says (1) Obamacare reduces the deficit by $123 billion dollars and (2) he gave $500 million in tax cuts to 1 million Nevada families? Heck, since Nevada's population is about 2.6 million, that means that just about every family got an average of $500 in tax cuts. Where does get that from? And what about the restoration of the higher pre-Bush tax rates, scheduled to kick in next year, that Reid undoubtedly supports?

Seems as Reid got his accounting education at Enron.

Correction to my post # 16:

Reid claims that ObamaCare reduces the deficit by $143 billion over the next decade. Still absolutely outrageous!

Social Security does have, in the form of non-negotiable government notes, a $2.5 trillion dollar surplus and is solvent until 2037, IF we assume that government will make good on what it owes SS. (That $2.5 trillion is counted in the $13+ trillion national debt.)

So, assuming the government repays what it owes SS, then SS has the flexibility to continue paying retirees, and those who'll retire in the next twenty or so years, and to also reform the program so that younger workers have options with at least part of their contributions, and their employer's contributions. We just need the right president and Congress to make the changes.

Pass a law saying the government cannot dip into the fund.
