HAWK POINT • The prime suspect in the abduction of a Louisiana, Mo., girl is dead, the Missouri Highway Patrol said Thursday morning.
The suspect shot himself in the head when authorities closed in Wednesday afternoon, a day after the little girl was found alive in a St. Louis County strip mall parking lot.
Cpl. Jeff Wilson of the Missouri Highway Patrol said the man died at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Charles.
The patrol didn't confirm the man's death until Thursday morning.
Police sources say the suspect is Paul S. Smith, a sex offender who lived at a home on Highway D in Hawk Point.

Prayers work. Looks like even Paul came to the correct decision.
Our laws need to be changed. He was "noncompliant," yet they found him that very day LIVING AT HOME. He owned a car, so the DMV, at the very least, knew where he was. Had the state done its job appropriately, this would never have happened. And: if you rape a 10-year-old, you should NEVER again be allowed out into society.
Thanks for the update. Nancy Grace had a scroll on during her show last night - claiming he was dead - but no LE would confirm it.
There is also a report that the murder of Jeff Smith, Hawks Point, may be related to this same suspect.

Investigators with the Major Case Squad are currently processing a silver Chevrolet Corvette that was stolen from Smith’s garage the night of his death. The vehicle was discovered abandoned off of the roadway a short distance from the crime scene, later that same morning. The investigators have advised that some very significant pieces of evidence have already been recovered from this vehicle.

I can not imagine what compels people to sexually abuse a child. Not sure if it is a form of mental illness, or just plain evil.
Seems like it can not be cured based on the number of repeat offenders. It would be interesting to know whether he released the girl after having a moment of sanity or some other reason.
I think this guy figured out the only cure for his compulsion.

Thanks for posting this. I am glad he will not be hurting anymore children. I just can’t feel sorry for anyone who does this to a child regardless of their past. I think people do know right from wrong and there just is not enough excuses for what he did.

I hope to God he did not have the opportunity to interfere with the little girl. I hope the search got too hot and he had to leave her before he had the chance to inflict harm beyond the appalling trauma of snatching her away from her home and family.

Smith is such a common name, but in this small community it’s always possible there is a family connection. Jeff Smith may have been shot because he recognized the thief.
There is another troubling aspect to this story. Smith, and his pedophile room mate molested boys and girls.
If they cannot be euthanized, these perverts should get life without parole. Gitmo would be perfect.
At 4:30 p.m., Smith was outside his home spray-painting his car silver, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. When they approached, they realized that Smith had a handgun and ordered him to drop it. He refused, and then shot himself in the head, the newspaper reported. He had been listed in critical condition before his death was reported.
But, here's the kicker:
Family members told NBC that when Alisa saw the man's picture on TV on Wednesday night, she said: "That's the man who cut my hair, Daddy." And when Blake saw the photo, he said: "That's the man who took Alisa," according to NBC's "Today".

Thank God for a happy ending for this little girl. Unfortunately, registered child sex offenders are all around us. I have gone on web sights that shows over 30 in a five mile radius from me. I have been called “neurotic” for not allowing my two little ones out in the front yard without me. They can play in the backyard with a six foot privacy fence around them and our German Shephard. I saw on a channel that this guy may have stalked this little girl and waited until a parent had slipped into the house for a moment. They are evil and do not ever get better. Hug your kids gang.
Jeffrey Smith and Paul Sterling Smith were both living in Hawk Point, MO. Yeah, sounds like Paul very well could have been involved with Jeffrey’s murder. They’re probably relatives and Paul was demanding a car from Jeff and things went bad. I’m betting forensics will prove the same gun was used.
Who was supposed to be keeping tabs on Smith? There he was living with another convict and having a gun. What other illegal activities (other than the kidnapping and possible murder of Jeffrey Smith) was he up to? There’s a parole officer that needs to be fired and a parole board that needs a house cleaning.
What so many people fail to grasp is that those online are only the who follow through on registering, and the LE has bothered to post online, and most importantly are only the ones who have been caught. There are dozens in every neighborhood who haven't been caught who no one knows about... yet.

Among them is the case of Bianca Piper, a 13-year-old girl who went missing from her home near Foley, Mo., in 2005. Foley and Louisiana are both situated along Missouri Route 79, and are about 25 miles apart.

A reporter asked the grandfather if there was any DNA evidence and he said no (this is before the perp offed himself). Little girl got her hair cut-off and was in boys cloth’s when found. Sounds like this is the extent of it.

Oellerman molested a 7 year-old girl - Smith molested a 10 year-old boy.

I don’t know what’s going on, but just thought y’all might like a heads up. This afternoon over on WS someone posted that there was a google link to kmov.com (St. Louis tv) that a body had been pulled out of Smith’s old apartment. However, kmov.com pulled the story so one one saw what it said. Perhaps it’s Oellermann since no one has seen him??? LE is making it seem as if they are looking more more than just Smith. A witness at the car wash said there was more than one person in the car that dropped her off.

Yah... that's easy-to-understand point. Of course... the reason that rape doesn't carry the death penalty, even with child, is that (and it's a fair point) the law doesn't want to create an incentive to just kill the victim. If the penalty is the same whether the victim lives or dies, then few if any victims will be allowed to live. But I agree it would be more satisfying to see them hang.

Two garages, two stolen cars, two repainted stolen cars, two pedophiles, two or possibly three deaths... it just keeps adding up. He should have been in jail, like duuuh! Who’s the judge that kept letting him out or giving him short sentences? Another relative?
There should be more investigations into these two room-mates and every missing boy & girl NATIONWIDE. Wonder if they had internet access?
